Swype is an application that has been developed by the inventors of T9, Cliff Kushler and Randy Marsden, and is supposed to revolutionize text input on a touchscreen.

Swype provides a faster and easier way to input text on any screen. With one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard, the patented technology enables users to input words faster and easier than other data input methods—at over 50 words per minute. The application is designed to work across a variety of devices such as phones, tablets, game consoles, kiosks, televisions, virtual screens and more.

Up until now Swype only ran on the Samsung Omnia II but now there is a trial-android-version available. Please note that this trial only works on Android phones with WVGA-resolution, meaning only on the Motorola Droid/Milestone.

Installation:

What do you need:

  • The app ASTRO Filemanager (or another program to install APK-files) to be found in the Android Market
  • The Swype-trial-release.zip (please rename and get rid of the .zip extension)

UPDATE: We have been asked by Swype to remove the download from our site as it was an unathorized distribution of their software.

How to install:

  • Install ASTRO File Manager from the Android Market
  • Copy the file [mfhs]Swype-SwypeReference-WVGA854-trial-release.0.35.3959.apk to your SD card
  • Go to ‘Settings ► Applications ► Unknown Sources’ and activate this
  • Start ASTRO File Manager
  • Tap on [mfhs]Swype-SwypeReference-WVGA854-trial-release.0.35.3959.apk and choose ‘install’, wait for the install to finish and then close ASTRO File Manager

How to use Swype:

  • After the installation go to ‘Settings ►  Locale & Text’ and deactivate the Android keyboard and activate Swype
  • There are several configuration options
  • Now you can use Swype to enter text
  • Please be aware that this is a trial version en can still contain bugs.

  6. @Unk, right, that’s why they clearly state “Please note that this trial only works on Android phones with WVGA-resolution, meaning only on the Motorola Droid/Milestone.”

  9. Anyone else having trouble installing? I’m not seeing an install option in Astro, and I’ve tried a couple of other install managers to no avail. I’m sure I’m making a stupid mistake but I can’t pinpoint it.

I’ve tried unzipping the file, and leaving it zipped – nada.

@MommyGeekology: just do a rename of the file [mfhs]Swype-SwypeReference-WVGA854-trial-release.0.35.3959.apk.zip to [mfhs]Swype-SwypeReference-WVGA854-trial-release.0.35.3959.apk

My instruction to unzip the file was false… just needs a rename, sorry about that, will edit the post in a few.

It works really really well! Not hype at all. I’ll be using this for quite a while, especially if the full release is a paid app. Tell me, where did you get this file?

(also, it’s interesting to find out that .apk’s are nothing more than renamed zips)
