During the Nexus One Launch there was not only talk about the new Google Smartphone but also about Android and updates for existing phones. The Motorola Droid would be the first device to receive the Android 2.1 in the next few days (apparently confirmed by Verizon Wireless).
It is not clear yet when and if there will be updates to Android 2.x for other existing phones. There are a lot of rumors going around that some Telco’s committed to this upgrade but I have not seen official confirmation about this (Rogers for instance said that the upgrade would come for the HTC Magic (32A) but not for the G1 Dream, citing hardware incompatibility problems).
Those of you with rooted devices should not worry about this though, Cyanogen already committed to continued development for the Dream/Magic even though he was one of the first to order a Nexus One as soon as the http://www.google.com/phone page was up 
Maybe it’s time to give Cyanogen a(nother) donation to keep him focused J

Of course the Droid will get an update. Motorola now has competition from HTC and will need to keep their flagship product fresh or introduce another one quickly once Nexus hits VZW. Motorola needs to sell lots of these phones since they haven’t had a serious hit in a long time.

It was heavily rumored that the 2.1 update would be coming to the Droid yesterday (i admit i was one of those who believed it was true) but it was obviously not true. Many people claim to have heard rumors of the release date from “Verizon Reps” and yet none of these rumors have proven to be true. The sad fact is that it seems nobody has any clue when it is coming, so we are just going to have to be patient.

what the hell is the hold up. In two weeks the hacker community has done more than motorola. seems to me the google experience means that experience no updates in a timely matter. “Droid Does” not have an update to 2.1. What a joke the motorola twitter account is. We are sorry but nexusone isnt selling and google has us by the balls so verizon flagship droid has to wait. Google is all screwed up with updates and should have pushed htc to update the older phones before the droid was even released. “Greed”. There is no need for anyone to be less than 2.1 as of the release of nexus one.
Embrace your droid… 2.1 is coming but til then enjoy what 2.0.1 has to offer, besides rooting and switching custom roms are easy peasy. I love droid and I’m in no hurry for the official 2.1. I’ll. I recently purchased the droid and have been waiting for this upgrade since 15 minutes after 2.01. Why can no one know for certain? Why is getting the community excited a bad thing?

Its not the excitement being a bad thing, its every one ripping on the droid and google for something that we don’t have to get, no where was 2.1 promised if you bought a droid, root your droid and go have fun and when 2.1 is pushed then go un root and wait for it. http://Www.rootyourdroid.info
