All I can do at this point is shake my head…
It sounds like this insanely odd (and ridiculously drawn out) 911 issue for Rogers’ HTC Dream and Magic customers could be coming to a close. *crossing my fingers* For those of you who are unaware of the issue, customers that own either of those two handsets have been unable to call 911 while GPS is enabled. Rogers and HTC have been scrambling to provide a fix for this very inconvenient and downright hazardous software glitch.
Dream and Magic customers were hit again this morning with another “fix”. This fix completely disables data to customers that did not apply the mandatory software updates by 6am (EST) this morning. Once the customer applies the update, their data will be restored. Of course, for their troubles they’ll be credited one month of data (within 60 days and excluding any roaming fees) and according to Engadget, Magic owners will be cursed upgraded to the Sense UI. So, if you’re a Rogers customer and you haven’t applied the update, do it ASAP.
Here is the message from Rogers courtesy of Absolutely Android:
“A mandatory software update is now available for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers to ensure 911 calls can be completed on these devices. These customers need to go immediately to http://www.rogers.com/dreamsoftwareupdatehttp://www.rogers.com/magicsoftwareupdate on a PC to download the update. Users of Windows 7 or Macintosh will need to call 1-888-Rogers1 for update instructions. Customers will need to backup any personal items before the update process.
Customers who have not downloaded this software update could have problems accessing 911. As a result, we are taking the precautionary measure of temporarily disabling internet access for Dream and Magic users on Sunday January 24 at 6:00AM (EST). Voice and text messaging will not be impacted. By disabling internet access, we can ensure that 911 calls are completed for all our Dream and Magic customers. Once a customer completes the software update, his/her internet access will be re-enabled within 24 hours.
Temporarily disabling internet access is the only decision we could make to ensure all customers can make 911 calls. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Dream and Magic customers on data plans will automatically be credited for one month of data fees (excluding roaming). This credit will show up on invoices within 60 days. We take this matter very seriously and continue to investigate the way this issue was addressed to determine how we can improve our internal and external processes.
Thanks,
Mary“

In 2007 I went to talk to Rogers about going on account. The sales guy was all mouth – no ears. I took that as part of the company culture and went to Bell Canada instead. They weren’t much better, but enough better I signed up for a month-by-month account, but not enough better to make a fixed-term contract a comfortable choice. Canadian telcos (and banks) behave like monopolies. You need them, they don’t need you….judging their attitude. No thanks. I’m not surprised Rogers is the cellular poster boy for bad treatment of customers and thoughtless handling of offerings. It’s the Canadian way as far as big corporates are concerned.

Can you still apply this update to a rooted phone, so you get the data back. Anyone know if this works. I have a rooted Dream, and a stock Magic, so im wondering about the dream.

What a write up there Cara
I’m impressed…again.
I figured Rogers were just having a run of bad luck as this type of thing (not exactly this) was happening back in July 2009 when i emigrated (Thanks @QMan) to Android but it seems Rogers is a little more badly documented them T-Mobile USA and a part of me feels sorry for them then another part says you can’t even do one thing right so why are you multi tasking your company with service providing and cable T.V :/
That’s my (not absolutelyandroid.com ‘s) 2cents worth
