Should Android Worry About iPad? Doubt It.

If you’ve been living in a cave for the past few days, you wouldn’t have heard about Apple’s new gadget the iPad.  The iPad is an Apple tablet that’s a basically an enlarged iTouch with a not-so-appealing name.  It’s packing a 9.7″ Touchscreen, weighs in at 1.5lbs and it’s powered by their new 1ghz A4 processing chip.  It has all the functionality of an iphone, of course without the phone part.  Apple is also throwing in a new book store, which is bringing in features seen on the Kindle and Nook into play.  Many have been speculating that it might even hurt Kindle’s sales.

Should Android be worried?  Not really.  The iPad lacks multi-tasking which is a key feature in most devices.  The ability to multi-task is something that we’ve now seen on Android as well as Palm’s Web OS.  You think Apple would get the hint?  It also lacks a camera, but I wouldn’t want to take a picture with a 10″ 1.5lb tablet either.

There is the possibility of an Android Tablet, titled “The Sholes” coming out.  No confirmation on that yet.  In the near future, I see Android being powered on newer netbooks later in 2010.  With the iPad going at the minimum of $499 with a $30 charge for At&t 3G service, you might as well get a netbook.  Just make sure you don’t get At&t’s network.  The iPad is all together a traveling device.  Who would want to travel with that beast?  At&t disappointed many loyal Apple fanboy’s at Macworld, which is good news for Android.

Don’t worry, Android lovers, the time will come when Android releases a tablet, or netbook with bigger and better features than the iMaxiPad.  Including multi-tasking.

nobody really cares about multi tasking. Think about it. The iphone deos not multi task… sold ~9 million last qtr (arguably the most popular smart phone on the planet). The Palm pre does multitask and it is almost dead. The droid does multitask … almost dead. The nexus one multitasks and was DOA… this one was so pathetic it didn’t even take off. 20000 units sold in a month … tsk tsk.

…. sure multitasking is less of a problem on a phone. But on a 10″ screen!, with 1 GHz processor, what a waste. I have an iPhone, and I am going to switch to Android very soon (Nexus One, or X10).

Seriously … leaving all the Fanboi/Fandroid comments aside, I agree with you that its a pity that multitasking was not included. BUT, Does the common technologically challenged consumer really care about multitasking ?

Apple will make sure that its own apps will multitask (just like the iphone)… Most people are happy with listening to music while browsing. Thats as much as they are going to multitask.
Everybody went on about iphone’s lack of multitasking but the numbers show very well that it is not a priority for most consumers.

Actually yes, for a tablet multitasking should be included due to the fact that it’s more like a computer and not a phone.

Listening to music while browsing is okay for your phone, but for a tablet that’s just downright bad quality.

You have to remember, this isn’t a phone..tablets are different and should be treated differently, not looked at as if it’s the iphone 4gs.

          • Exactly. When you see a tablet, you see a computing device with no hardware keyboard. Similar to a netbook. So you expect the same features! So Multitasking is an important feature that should of been included in the iPad.

        • eatmold

What angers me with the iPhone is I use Spotify, and cannot listen and browse at the same time, what a waste that would be on the iPad. My wife has the T-Mobile G1 and although now slowing down, I am jealous of its flexibility.

Such a shame, if they had put OSX on this with touch / gesture support this would have been a great device.

    Now this is a tablet worth carrying around… All-In-One… Phone/Android Tablet/e-Reader/etc…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjBcv9iZinY&feature=player_embedded

Just hope they stick A2.1 in there before letting it’s let loose in a couple of months..

The price range should be under $600 although some fools thought that what a prototype costs right now in the black market is what it’s going to sell for at release…

You didn’t mention that it’s running iPhone OS 3.2, and that indications point to iOS 4.0 having multitasking. Personally I don’t like the iPad (does it come with wings? can you put it in your pants?) because I don’t see the point of it at that price. Next year when people are upgrading to the 2nd gen iPad (with better wings?) I may pick up a 2nd hand iPad.
