We received a little update on the Rogers debacle today. Apparently Rogers really, really wants to make sure their customers are aware that they need to apply the “bug fix” and are calling and texting their customers multiple times daily. There have even been reports that outgoing calls are redirected to Rogers customer care. The following are tweets from RogersMary, a community manager on the Social Media team for Rogers and Fido:
RogersMary @************* @****** Custs are being directed to Care to ensure they’re aware of fix. This in no way impacts ability to call 911 direct.
@******** Not so. Customers are directed to Care to ensure they are aware of the bug fix. It doesn’t impact ability to call 911 direct.
I can understand the calling and texting (to a point) but redirecting calls is a bit much, even if it doesn’t block 911. There are other types of emergency calls too, Rogers. Chill.
If our Rogers readers are experiencing any of this, please let us know. Leave a comment.

My data access was revoked on Sunday January 24th at about noon. There was a short text the night before regarding a Rogers distributed ROM update. I wasted that night trying to reactivating the data. Rogers lied to me about being unable to reactivate my data directly, and I was able to find a workaround with a simple SIM card refresh by a Rogers support technician not with the smartphone division. The smartphone division spread misinformation to customers to attempt to force them to update, and many of them did.
The HTC Dream update has no feature improvements, and merely includes the 911 patch. The HTC Magic update came with the HTC Sense UI and the 911 update. Both patches locked users out from being to root their phones.
Personally, after my data access was restored via the workaround, I received calls and SMS messages on my HTC Dream daily. I am running Cyanongenmod 4.2.x, so the 911 problem has already been fixed on my ROM. However, Rogers scans for the radio image on the phones. I continued to receive harassment from Rogers in the form of SMS messages and automated phone calls until I updated my radio image to one matching to the one distributed with the official Rogers update.
The Rogers update distributed locks users from rooting their phones completely. It is to my belief that this update was done intentionally to prevent Rogers phones from being rooted any further, as they continued to send messages to unaffected users and denying data access to those who were not running their firmware.
I also have a friend with an imported 32B HTC Magic who has data disabled with no solution for the time being. He is currently rooted as well.

I was in the same situation as the fellow above. I have a Rogers HTC Dream. Rooted and running the latest cyanogen. When my data was cut I called and asked for the network refresh. After waiting for 2 and a half hours I finaly got through and it had worked. I told them I applied the update and still didn’t have data. They asked for the build number and I worked it out of the technician without him knowing I didn’t have the build they were looking for.
After getting my data back I then thought I was in the clear. Wrong. Since I had my data returned I have had at minimum 3 calls and 2 sms a day from Rogers about the update. Extremely annoying and all could have been avoided if they just updated to 1.6 like the rest of the world.

If you are on the HTC Dream and still rooted, there is a simple workaround on your phone. On the other hand, if you have the HTC Magic 32A, there is a more convoluted fix available as well. Try the XDA forums and ask for help or look in the developers thread for Rogers for your phone.

Hmm, I can’t seem to find the Dream fix. I am still rooted and using the Dream. Would you have a link to the fix? Thanks

I have a Magic 32A and it’s working fine with CursorSense. It allows you keep your root while complying with Rogers demands…for the time being.
