It’s only been a couple of weeks since Chris Soyar’s decided it was time to try and get the community together and work on a community ROM. The first goal of this team is to create the best Eclair ROM available. The outcome was OpenEclair and the OpenAndroidTeam and it hasn’t stopped since.
I’m hoping that I had something to do with this de-fragmentation of the developer communityand I’m working closely with the team to help get organizaed and continue this team spirit into future projects.
Be sure to follow the OpenAndroidTeam tweets for the latest release info.
Community members are volunteering to support the project and the core team currently consists of:
Developer – ctso – Twitter
Developer – wesgarner – Twitter
Developer – benbuchacher – TwitterForum Support – zeppelin481 – Twitter
Forum Support – zimphishmonger – Twitter
Forum Support – JAguirre1231 – Twitter
Yours truly is also helping out by trying to get the whole Open Android Development organized and centralized to make it easier for everyone to follow the progress.
There are other projects in the pipeline under the OpenAndroidTeam banner including OpenUpdater and OpenRelease . Further information can be found here.
A few releases have come and a stable and beta path are now available for you all to try. The latest OpenEclair Beta v1.1.4 has just been release.
OpenEclair – v1.1.4 BETA – 02/07/2010
- Revamped Kernel.
- Latest AOSP (inc MMS fixes).
- Lots of bug fixes.

I think this is a really great idea. It allows all these devs ( all of whom I am familiar with ) to pool their knowledge and expertise without any constraints. Because of the co-operation with each other and respect for each other, it allows for maximum creativity within the community. Bravo!!

@Simon Walker – it would be a great idea to have a full set of clear instructions tailored around how to install OpenEclair for the noobs and anyone unfamiliar with the HowTo’s of installing Android. That will certainly help with its uptake from those who are ‘on the edge’.
Although it is a fairly trivial thing to do, those who are not familiar with the process will be put off.
To anyone considering OpenEclair I say “Go for it”. It literally transforms the G1, bringing it bang up to date. Although not as powerful as the Nexus One (I run the two side by side) it certainly gives to the G1 a very capable delivery of Android 2.1 Eclair. Even the Beta is fast and stable enough to use in a practical manner.
