What Would You Like To See In DumbestCrayons Nexus Rom Builder?

XDA user DumbestCrayon is building software for your pc that will let you choose your ROM, be it Enomther or Cyanogen, and from there choose what apps you want and don’t want in the ROM. After you choose the app will then rebuild the ROM with your choices, push the zip to your SD card and then reboot your phone into recovery.

The application is not fully done yet and is still a work in progress. Once it is done, it will be released on XDA and Androidspin along with an accompanying story. What we would like right now is to know your suggestions on what apps should be included in the app selection. Apps such as Amazon mp3, Wired Tether, Spare Parts, etc.

So what do you think should be included? DumbestCrayon will be reading the comments and responding here, so be sure to let him know what you’d like to see in it.

The app should be good for release within the next 2-3 weeks.

  1. Hope it works for mac users like me

A open framework that allows other ROM developers to add their roms to this app. So we can use it for Hero and other devices with custom roms.

Apps I think should be included/option to not include?

Options between Eclair and Donut apps
    AmazonMP3
    AdFree
    APNdroid
    Car app
    Dev Tools
    Email
    facebook
    modified contacts and phone
    News and Weather
    Spare Parts
    Wired tether
    Wireless tether
    Work Email

    This sounds great!

  4. Andrew

Will it be web based(MoDaCo Kitchen) or a desktop application?

  5. bryuliro

I tink it will be cool if you can easily change colors in the rom like the notification bar and the color of the keyboard too but that’s just an idea: -)

  6. siirial

honestly, just an option to upload apps already installed on the phone prior to wiping would be best.
Then build rom with those apps built in

is it possible to do this with apps already purchased? like twidroid or documents to go better keyboard etc

I would have to say that every preloaded app should be an option. I don’t know if that was already what was happening but that would be a start. Then I would go to the Market and look at user stats. to see what the top free apps are and put them in there as well. I don’t know if you can do the last part because it might screw up the DL count in the Market for them. If you could create a totally flexible Rom installer that had App choices with Rom choices and Hand set choice’s it would be the ultimate loader. Good luck and Thank You for the contributions to Android.

Thanks a lot for all the input. Working on some of the ideas. I do like the idea of adding your own apks to the ROM ;) getting that code worked out right now. I can’t target the colors and theming because that would be something completely different, more theme related. I’m looking at building the ROM itself. More performance and app related. Thanks for the ideas though, keep them comin :)

MarketEnabler should be an option ;-)

I would suggest to give the posibility that sites/forums/… can make theire own repository of apps and in your application you could enter the repo as source (equal to apt-get where you can just enter your own repo url).

For the theming stuff… maybe connect with stericson and his metamorph project.

  10. It would be nice if you could just add your own apps (well, you kind of always can, but still) via the GUI, or by dropping them into a folder.

Even more awesome: Or to get them (as in extract) from other roms as well.

I totally agree with the first suggestion: make it multiplatform / device.
Fine if you don’t to support older android builds (like 1.0 or 1.5/1.6) but make it multi-hardware compatible please.

Also: adding the option to choose from multiple lockscreens, Sense, Blur or Samsung wizz (when released) as an option would be nice.

  11. ultra spikey

Mobile Defense to be added as a system app.

My biggest request is the ability to REMOVE apps! Stuff like HTC footprints, HTC sync, or carrier-specific apps. ROMs are pretty variable in the inclusion of these apps and add-ons so it’d be great to have a way of taking them out and have a clean install from the get-go.

    Looking forward to the program!!

  13. I am very excited for this app I as well as many others have been waiting for something like this to come along.I think that being able to keep already uploaded apps and to remove stock apps too then it wouyld be perfecto in my eyes
