The guys over at Engadget posted a video a few days ago that shows a Nexus One dropping it 3G connection depending on how you hold the phone. It sure appears like the Nexus One has some form of hardware design issue that needs to be addressed ASAP by HTC / Google.
I think T-Mobile can be let off the hook for this one if the video has any validity to it.
So now what happens to a phone that has a severe hardware design issue and all those people who have invalidated their phone warranty by unlocking the boot loader? I think we need some form of official comment from HTC or Google on the status of this issues and the contents of this video

Great, Just my luck. i just ordered mine on friday.
I love this phone and have not had any problems with it. I used the Mytouch 3g for about a week before returning it. It is SOOO much better than the Mytouch. Because the processor speed is so much faster, you do not have the Force Close or Wait issues that you have with the Mytouch 3g when using the apps. The response is instantaneous, the scrolling is not delayed like the Mytouch!
True, I am aware of the difference between the two, thats why I took the plunge and bought one. I’m pretty sure with or without this so called “flaw” I would still enjoy the phone, all I hope is that it wont be a big issue. Thanks for the input brother.

Still a lot of testing going on, but I can confirm that if I hold my phone as shown in the video. I lose 2 bars of signal strength. This is crazy.

I have yet to see this beyond what I saw with my MT3G. I do have semi-small hands so I spread my fingers to grasp the phone better, so simply spread your fingers and it could stop this if you have this issue.

So maybe i should wait a bit before rooting the nexus. Hope its not that big of a deal. $600 is a lot of money to be wasting.

No matter how I place my hands, I can not replicate this using CyanogenMod 5.0.2 on my Nexus One. It sometimes drops from HSDPA to UMTS, but I only ever see GPRS or Edge when I am train commuting on the country side.
Thanks for the input, That sounds promising. Maybe this problem only happens to some devices, ill update once i get mine and try it out.
I don’t know what/if something wrong, all I know is that I absolutely love my Nexus One – it has effectively replaced my laptop (in bed, on the commute etc.).
*high five* no doubt! I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy it as well.

signal strength varies between 2 bars and 3 bars, regardless of which hand I use, and never fluctuates between 3g and Edge. I have 3g all the time. There’s been maybe 3 instances in the last 12 days that it dropped 3g connection on this phone. I literally have to switch down to Edge when I don’t use data just to save battery, but 3g connection is not a problem for me.

This is a big issue for people commuting long distances or if you are in an area with weak 3G. The problem is the reception is not very stable and also the phone cannot hold well 3G signal. For you all that are not experiencing any problems please get another phone (any make) with same carrier (doesn’t have to be T-Mobile) an put the phones side by side, then do the test on the video an see what’s happening.

The radio wave fluctuation caused by putting your hand over the back of the phone triggers a bug in the radio firmware, don’t be idiots, it will be fixed.

I have a Nexus One and I can replicated this issue just like in the video. I have Tmobile with the recently OTA. I’m in the DC area and have 4 bars in my apartment. When I cover the bottom of the phone my 3G service almost instantaneously drops and I switch over to edge in 5-10 seconds.
This is a real problem. I have big hands and when I hold the phone up to my ear this switching happens. I’ve also found that I have many more dropped calls when using the phone against my ear as opposed to with Bluetooth.

I am still testing more with the connection issues.

Don’t get me wrong, I still say that I in no way regret my purchase of the Nexus One. The Phone is awesome.

Why is anyone surprised? This isn’t necessarily a bug of any sort. The video is showing someone covering the handset’s antenna with their hand which then causes attenuation of the received signal and hence the demonstrated effect. A similar “defect” was reported against the iPhone 3G and latterly the 3GS.
In normal use, I challenge anyone to hold a phone like in the video and use it to make a call, the antenna naturally locates in line with the little finger and is not as covered as in the video. In the video the presenter is doing their best to cover the antenna as completely as possible. Why not do it properly and stick a sheet of kitchen foil over it?
We’ve been here before. This is a non-issue! Everyone stop worrying. Your brand new investment isn’t about to go belly up on you because of this.

I read somewhere that the antena was in the back almost bottom part of the phone, so if you want a good radio recepcion you should not cover this area with your hand… Never thought it will be so important

Ok got my Nexus1 and just as I thought, this problem was only true with the older radio, covering the back significantly drops signal. But once I updated it to the new radio, 3G connection was way better and does not loose signal no matter how I cover the back.
Hope this helps. Enjoy!
