Google Earth Debuts On Android

by Ray Poole on 22nd Feb 2010 -

Google released today yet another one of their home brewed apps “Google Earth” into the Android Market place. This application is very much like the desktop version of Google Earth, with zoom from space to any place on earth. The bonus features of the Android application is integration of Google Maps layers, such as Places, Wikipedia, Businesses, Panoramic, Roads, Borders and Labels, and Terrain (no buzz yet for you buzz crazy people). Also you can use GPS, to find your direct location, and like in Google Maps you can follow yourself as you walk or drive along. The application itself is only 5.72 MB so be sure to head on over to the market to download, and play with it for yourself.

Oh, by the way there is multitouch included in the application. Expect a full review to come from our team later today.

For those of you with 1.5 or 1.6, you won’t see this in the market just yet. From what we’ve heard the application on seems to be showing up for Nexus One owners in the market. We’ll keep you updated.

Hi I’m Ray, I’m currently in school as a Biology/Pre-medical major, though science isn’t my only love. I happen to be a huge technology head, or as most people call it “geek”. I spent the early years into computers, starting with building an awesome gaming computer. Computers turned into phones and technology in general.

It doesn’t work on my MT3G running CompleteEclair. It installs just fine, but doesn’t launch. Bummer, I was hoping for this app.

That’s true. I suppose I can roll back to Cyanogenmod 4.14. Maybe I’ll wait until 4.15. I just want a working 2.1. My phone is only 6 months old. They’ve gotta get this obselescence issue under control, not everyone can buy a new phone every 3 months.

I can, and do. technology comes at a price.

With the ever growing speed of Android as an OS and the ever growing speed of newer and better parts coming out you will never catch up unless you have money to drop on whatever newer technology every 5-6 months or so.

            Well, good for you.

Still, “technology comes at a price” doesn’t even begin to answer “what exactly is missing in 1.5 and 1.6 so that it was not possible to target them too”

Not showing for Droid yet, either.

Not showing for HTC Magic in New Zealand. I will be interested to see if this works with the 10MB RAM hack. If it doesn’t it could pretty much kill the hack for many users. I’d rather have Google Earth.

I can see them rolling this out in stages. Having several million people trying to download it all at once would be sad for all concerned.

Not at all, I don’t feel that is the concern what so ever.

The announcement says GE is only supported on ARM7 processors running Android v2.1.

I flashed a v2.1 ROM onto my HTC Magic 32B but I can see from a logcat that GE crashes immediately. This version won’t be running on the vast majority of existing Android phones.
