With the onslaught of Android devices that have been released this year, Google’s own child is no doubt at the top of the pack. With the phone being available on 2 of the major carriers already and a release set for Sprint later this year, Verizon seems to be missing the boat. On the Nexus One ordering page it is evident that the phone will no doubt be available for purchase, but there is no official date set as of this time. Many believed the Big Red would release the phone during its moment at CTIA, however to many people’s surprise nothing big as far as phones came out of the press release (the biggest things on Verizon’s list included Skype ability and the advancement of its network).
Is the lack of the Nexus One really hurting them though? With Motorola’s Droid being one of the best selling Android devices to date, I would argue not. Yet the number of people that want either an HTC or HTC/Google branded Android device on Verizon seems to suggest otherwise. For many, the Nexus One meets these wants.
The CTIA event proved to be a big disappointment for many Verizon customers, and with the launch of Verizon 2.0 set for the 28th of this month, people are hoping the phone will be released then. 2.0 not only would be a perfect time for the phone launch but also a good point in time to launch another device. The Droid went up for purchase about 6 months ago; if the Nexus One were to be released before this month is out, it would give Verizon plenty of time to get ready for the launch of HTC’s Incredible at the end of this year. Both phone launches would come at a great time, seeing as the kiddies want a new device for summer and others will want something shiny and new to open up on Christmas.
In any case, Verizon is missing out on a particular subset of customers that are both waiting and wanting to join “America’s largest 3G network”.
With the launch and announcement of Sprint’s 4G mobile monster is there still time for Verizon to get back in the game though?

I am extremely disappointed that Verizon is so slow to move on the Nexus One. It seems as if T-Mobile is adding a new Android phone every month and Verizon can’t even release the dates on Nexus One or update Droid or Eris successfully to 2.1 on time. Why is Verizon so bad at this?
On the other hand, if one looks at it from the fragmentation side of the argument, Verizon might actually be doing something right in releasing devices less frequently.

Hi Justine,
Did I read you correct that Nexus One will be on Sprint Network Later this year (release set for Sprint later this year)?
Hawkins, if your a Sprint customer, the HTC Evo 4G is hands down a much better phone.

No doubt, Verizon is losing customers for not having an HTC device.
They just released the devour. I mean c’mon – Really?
A BRAND NEW phone running 1.6 with a 3mp camera?
Who wants it? And for $150 on a 2 year contract?
Wally world has the Droid for twenty bucks on a new contract.
If the N1 and adr6300 isn’t released soon, I’m definitely going with Sprint!
My thought process exactly. Online you will pay 50 bucks more ordering the Devour from Verizon than you would if you were to go to a Best Buy and pick up the Droid. Best Buy also has no rebates. The $100 price tag is a done deal.

Hawkins, yes Sprint did confirm that Sprint is getting the Nexus One later this year. Kyle I agree fully VZW needs to move on this before people move to AT&T with either iPhone or Nexus One. With At&t having similar prices and now investing to bump up the network to make it just as good as VZW id be pulling out all the stops if I was VZW.

Pretty funny that AT&T got the n1 without asking for it. Rodgers asked and got it quick. Just so happens the 3G is compatible so AT&T is in too. Canada gets it but big red can’t get it’s act together. Vzw late to the party again. At least they finally got the two year old hero aka eris.
Posting from my 1g itouch. Waiting for an android.

So was a real date actually give for late in the year for the Incredible?? Last I heard was beginning of April and are there actually any confirmed specs for the incredible? I’m hoping it ends up being Verizon’s version of the Evo 4g except on a real network and real 4g speed HSPA+ Is the way to go that way Verizon and any other company can use any phone in the world since that seems to be the standard worldwide so far. Sorry Sprint sometimes it sucks being first…….

Verizon is really pissing me off, my contract is up in a couple of weeks and if they don’t come out with something worth buying then I have no choice but to go to Sprint or AT&T.. Everybody needs to email Verizon and let them know that we the customers are behind in phones and we want to keep up with AT&T & Sprint

to HTC FAN: have you not seen the droid eris in the verizon store?, yes that is an htc device. and to all the people comparing to how fast att and rogers got the phone, its because they are GSM… you seriously do not know what you’re talking about if you overlook that.. Verizon will get a cdma version, just like sprint (who also does not have the phone yet), which just went through the FCC. In general almost all smartphones come out gsm first, then on 3-12 months later the cdma version comes out..
so you cannot just blame verizon for being “late to the party” Look to the manufacturer, verizon can’t just make a cdma version out of thin air, they need to make it first!

Valid points, but the announcement of the Verizon Nexus One happened a few months ago. Mostly right after the Nexus One was released for GSM carriers. It is not the manufacturer’s fault that the carrier delays the phone. While you are right on the FCC approval, it is the carriers after that, that determine when to release the phone.
