AdMob, the company that lives for data crunching, is out with their February report and it looks good. Well, good if you roll with the green guy. Out of the top 10 smartphones, Android claimed 7 spots. Furthermore, Android was the only device to have multiple versions make the list. Some other highlights from the report:
- It’s not really a surprise Motorola Droid was the most popular Android, but the #2 spot went to HTC Dream, aka the HTC G1. HTC Magic/MyTouch made the list as well, all the more reason to keep the custom ROMs coming.
- Android was the fastest growing OS in the AdMob network year-over-year. Android’s share of smartphone requests increased from 2% in February 2009 to 24% in February 2010.
- Looking at worldwide popularity, Android still claims 6 spots on the list.
- Based on AdMob requests, in January 2009 Android claimed barely 10% of iPhone’s share. This year they are almost tied, with Android predicted to move past iPhone as early as next month.

SCORE FOR THE G1!!!!!!!!!
Yes! G1 was #3. As unpowerful and homely as the G1 is, it’s still right up there with the big boys. Now HTC and T-Mobile need to realize that we need a G2 with a G1 keyboard and the most awesome specs of any phone out there!

Are these global figures or US statistics only?
I simply cannot believe that the G1 is making the sales lead for Android. There is no way that can be the case in the UK or EU where we have a much richer selection of Android handsets all round.
Either way, it is nice to see Android making the gains that have been predicted for a while now. It was inevitable, but seemed to be a little way coming. The likes of the latest HTC devices with their powerful Snapdragon processor are going to accelerate this gain. I don’t particularly like Samsung hardware but their new 4 x faster CPUs are likely to do even more damage to the non-Android competition.

G1 was and still is a badass phone! Throw some SuperD on it or that other crazy espanol hack and it can still keep pace with the big boys!
