Dell Aero Hands-On

Over at Engadget, they got their hands on a Dell Aero to finally turn on and play with. Their findings can be summed up in one word- disappointing.  But don’t take my word for it, read on to see just how low it goes:

  • The UI has been completely re-skinned, and there are multiple skins available — but also missing is Google Maps, Gmail, and a handful of other Google-centric features… like the Android Market.
  • It looks like AT&T and Dell want to turn this device into a glorified feature phone, which is a huge downer — it’s definitely loaded with AT&T bloatware.
  • Dell has merged the home button and back button into a single target on the left side of the phone — long press for home, short press for back, and it doesn’t always feel very natural.
  • Screen responsiveness wasn’t super tight, though this is still an unreleased version, so we suppose that could change.

The positive one can take away from the Dell Aero is it’s sleek and light exterior. Think of it as a plush toy, cute on the outside, nothing but fluff inside .  It remains to be seen if the core Google Apps will be added before the Aero ships, or if the Aero really will be a just a feature phone that is a shadow of how great it could be. Head Engadget for more photos as well as video of the Aero in action as well as a really painful keyboard interface.
