Me: What is the deal with the British pound being worth almost double the American dollar?
David: Its so awesome. That’s why. Also USD sucks.
You’re probably wondering what this exchange has to do with Android. A couple of retailers in the UK, Clove and Expansys to be exact, are now selling unlocked versions of HTC Desire. The good news is Desire will work in the states. The bad news is while the device supports 3G, it will not work on U.S. 3G bands, leaving you with a lowly 2G device.
The other slightly bad news is the selling price of £330 works out to be about $507 plus taxes and shipping fees, the reason for questioning my emigrated friend. It’s a pretty standard price, but one cannot help getting a bit excited at the site of a low number. Given the above limitations, would you really want to pay that much?

Well, Europeans have to order the nexus from US, and Us citizens have to order the desire from EU.
That’s called balance, ying yang style

Generally, Expansys are the more expensive of the online retailers. The Clove website is GBP 50 (approx USD 76) cheaper than Expansys – including UK taxes (VAT @ 17.5%). I would generally steer away from Epansys on that basis.
I think that by its general UK availability the Desire is going to be the dominant device, even though [in my opinion] the Nexus One has more going for it in practical terms. Its not all about more RAM, optical track-pad and Sense UI. The major omission in the Desire is the dual-microphone noise cancellation that is so bulletproof on the Nexus One. Under-stated and under-played, the noise cancellation is so effective that people you’re talking with think you’re in a quiet room, making the Phone such a superior device to almost any other currently in existence!
Google got it bang on when they specified that feature in their handset.

Telstra in Australia is releasing a version of the Desire at the end of April which is compatible with the US 3G bands. That would suggest that the Desire might eventually arrive in the US, given its initial popularity in Europe.
