Remember the popular rumor that the HTC Hero 2.1 update is due in April but it was not confirm. Well, the guys over at ThisAndroidLife sent an email to HTC asking about the 2.1 Update for HTC Hero and a HTC representative sent him the following reply:
“Some of the phones in our Android line up including your Hero are due to receive an upgrade, and it is scheduled to be released starting at the end of April. Your phone should be upgraded Over-The-Air. You can expect a pop-up message on your phone when connected to the internet once it is ready. When the upgrade is ready, we will notify you via our website and on various social media networks including Twitter and Face book”
So all you guys who are so angry on their HTC Hero, I think it’s time to get ready for the 2.1 Update.
This is not fake and it’s originally from HTC. Half month is passed, so lets see what happens. The rest of the Sense UI powered devices will get the 2.1 Update later.
So guys are you happy now?

They didn’t say which year though..
2.1 should have arrived tomorrow (16.4.2010) and HTC support is not to be trusted, you will get many different responses..

Out of curiosity since this is talking about updates, does thia also include the G1? I know this doesn’t fit here but I am curious to know if I should stick it out with the G1 much longer or finally swtich to full touch support

I work for a large national retailer. Called HTC US today and was told to expect ota updates to start 4/26th. HTC and Sprint are fixing two final bugs…

Yes, the Sprint Hero will be getting it. I actually just rooted a Sprint Hero and flashed the ‘leaked’ 2.1 update to the phone. Works great.

Was this ever in doubt? It had been said from the get-go by HTC that Hero would get Eclair (http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/htc-confirmed-to-be-cooking-up-android-2-0-update-for-hero-othe/). There have even been several leaked 2.1 Hero builds, so it’s not a secret they’re working on them.
They had also said that all their Sense devices would get an update to eclair, though they’ve remained particularly mum about Dream/Sapphire and what the future for the devices lies. My guess is that we’ll see 2.1 for Dream/Sapphire, but, as mentioned by Google engineers, without 2.1 features such as Live Wallpapers or 3D Gallery, so the release would be more akin to what you’d get on the original build for the Droid, plus, as a Google engineer told me, we’ll get Launcher2 too, but that’s about it.

I have an unlocked GSM HTC Hero – outright – which means I paid the expensive price tag and I can use any GSM SIM card I want here in Australia.
Will I also get the update “pop up” notification and be given the chance to upgrade over the air once I am on the net or is this only for contracted phones in the US? My phone is original, no mods, original Hero firmware.
