Well this is a bit of a surprise. Blame that pesky volcano, which has been doing more than just stranding people in foreign lands. The ash in the atmosphere is preventing flights from Asia, where HTC is manufactured. Both Vodaphone and 3 UK are reporting stock shortages of HTC Legend and HTC Desire. Here’s the statement from 3 UK:
I wanted to update you on the HTC Desire stock situation.
As you know, we’ve been pre-selling the Desire through three.co.uk for new customers, and through our Upgrades team for existing customers.
Stock has been tight, and we appreciate your patience. We’ve tried really hard to spread what we have equally amongst our sales channels, but the Desire is very much in-demand and it was always going to be tricky to get one in the hands of everyone that wanted one.
The stock allowance that we had to carry us through to next week has flown off the shelves. Many existing customers will know that our Upgrades team had limited stock very early on.
Our original plan was that further deliveries were due this week. But as a result of the ash cloud that has been causing problems all weekend, the deliveries that we were expecting from HTC’s manufacturers in Asia have not arrived. They are unlikely to until the chaos subsides.
The plan for tomorrow was to have our stores and warehouses fully stocked up, but that’s now not going to be possible. We do have some left from our original batch, and these will be shared amongst 50 of our stores. Unfortunately we can’t allocate these in advance.
The rest of the statement goes on to list the stores that will have Desire in stock. If you’re in the UK and want to know, look here.

A friend took delivery of a Desire today – he got it from the AWFUL 3 rather than T-Mobile or anyone else as the AWFUL 3 were the only ones with stock.
Did I mention that 3 are AWFUL?

I believe this is totally false, this answer hide another problem, phones are generally shipped by boat, not by plane (too expansive).

I got my HTC Desire on 14th April, 3 days after placing the order via Mobile phones direct. Although the delivery was fast they did pass on the wrong info to T-Mobile like the phone I had which then caused a problem with the unlimited internet, they also didn’t transfer my number over as requested, had to contact T-Mobile to do this. Would recommend anyone who wants a Desire try these guys, you just have to contact T-Mobile to make sure they have the correct info.
