First thoughts on FroYo

FroYo

It’s been hard to part with the Eclair pastry that Cyanogen has brought to Nexus One owners, but the Frozen Yogurt was so tempting. Yesterday like the many others, I flashed the official FroYo ROM (FRF50) on my Nexus One . Here’s some thoughts after a day with FroYo…

  • It flys, the JIT (Just-In-Time) Dalvik Compiler is extremely fast
  • As promised, the browser is much faster
  • Flash works great, don’t expect the same thing as your desktop though. It’s still rough around the edges.
  • The stock keyboard is improved, personally it feels faster. Noticeably you can change your input language easily and a slight redesign of the suggestions.
  • The stock messaging app has changed, nothing noticeable though
  • Some apps like Handcent SMS force close, this could be because of broken API’s or the JIT Dalvik Compiler. Although I’m sure they will be fixed soon
  • I’ve yet to come across any apps that have built in support for apps2sd. Thankfully you can manually push all your apps2sd in a shell/terminal emulator using the command “pm setInstallLocation 2″ without quotes
  • Briefly looking at tethering, there is no support for  USB Tethering on Mac OSX
  • Battery life seems better but I suppose it could be a placebo effect
  • On the current Nexus One build FRF50, protected apps don’t show in the market. There’s speculation that Google just needs to flip the switch which is likely.

That’s all for now but if there’s anything you care to know about that I’ve left unanswered feel free to drop a line in the comments and I’ll get back to you.

Android makes its way to the Pentagon, with oodles of restrictions of Course

  1. Hey Tyler, good post. These were exactly my feelings towards the new OS as well. For some reason the Music app won’t play my mp3′s, but I have the pre-rooted version from Paul O’Brien @ MoDaCo. Some people on the XDA Forums said it was because of the radio, but I have’t tried to go back to the OS 2.1 radio to confirm. Hopefully the A2SD will begin working soon; running low on RAM.

My expericence with Froyo has been a great one. I went back to stock everything for this one to get the full effect with no root interupitions. The App to SD card is awesome. Unlike with the Dev Roms you dont have to set up a partition on you sdcard to use it. Basically you go to settings applications management and move the selected app to your sd card. My Mp3 plays perfectly, the new radio is giving me better 3g receptions, and the web browser as well as flash works flawlessly. Well as for flash theirs still some minor bugs, but its expected because it is a beta. I also love how the launcher is smoother without any lags. Score one for google and the nexus 1. Great work and worth the wait.

I’ve noticed that none of the agenda widgets now work….
And re the paid apps; I’m so glad i use titanium backup. I need my more icons widgets!
Other than that, it seems to be a bit more polished in virtually every respect
