Wow, that was fast. A team of three guys over at Grack have gotten root access to the device after only a few hours of work. They aren’t releasing rooting details yet, but here is a video. You can also see additional screen shots at their site.

Awesome, now you don’t have to pay sprint 30 bucks to tether
Yup. Nice, isn’t it?
When the Evo gets 2.2, will we still have to pay extra? (even though tethering will be supported at an OS level)? Thoughts?
If rooted, no. If updated through Sprint, then yes. Just about every Android based device has customization from the vendor. Splash screens, applets (T-Mobile AppPack, Sprint TV, etc.) Sprint is sure to lock out the feature when they push an update to their locked device, unless you $pay$. I think this is reasonable. Has anyone compared rates to the iPhone plan? Or even the Incredible plan on Verizon? (verizon gets $30/mo just for unlimited text, and AT&T gets $20). At least they are offering tethering right out of the gate.
I commend these guys for rooting so quickly. And you have to figure that only a small percentage of the Sprint customers even know what rooting is, or even know about this site. Sprint will still get plenty of revenue.

Sweet! Well done!! Can’t wait to take this phone home… Sprint’s plans seem to be more affordable than either of the aforementioned carriers. However, that doesn’t mean that I will be one of the millions throwing away $30 a month! Thanks.
