When you first downloaded Froyo for your Nexus One and tried the new tethering features, you probably noticed that when you connected via USB on Linux, Windows 7 or Windows Vista, everything went smoothly. But what happens if you try USB Tethering with Windows XP? Well, it’s not so smooth. As many of you probably noticed, you are going to need a driver to get tethering to work on Windows XP. We will guide you through the steps to get you tethering away on your Windows XP machine.
This setting is only in Froyo 2.2
- Download the following configuration file (tetherxp.inf) to your Windows XP computer. Typically, you can right-click on the link and choose “Save As”. (If your browser appends .html to the file name, you will need to edit the name to remove the .html extension.)
- Use the USB cable that came with your phone to connect your phone to your computer.
- On the Android phone, press Home, press Menu, and touch Settings to open the Settings application.
- Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
- Check USB tethering.
- When Windows XP’s New Hardware Wizard opens, select No, not at this time and click Next.
- Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
- Click Browse to browse to the directory where you installed the configuration file you downloaded in Step 1 and click Next. Windows XP uses the configuration file to configure itself to support USB tethering with the Android phone.
- When Windows XP finishes installing the software for Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS, click Finish.

That’s great. Now all we need is Froyo running on our phones…

I tried the wifi tethering with my iPod Touch. The iTouch was able to consistently do 215(ish) KB / sec down and about the same upward. Not very fast, but usable. The 3G on the phone itself speed tested at 2MB down and 1.5MB up…so the tether only has access to about 10%-15% of the available bandwidth.
One test…doesn’t mean anything by itself. But I leave this data point here.
@Linuxluver… you sir, are an idiot. The speed test you did is measuring the bandwidth in megabits per second, and the download speeds you are reporting are in megabytes (or kilobytes) per second. The tether has 100% of the bandwidth, not 10-15%.

It’s 2010……….Upgrade XP to Win7 or don’t be mad when new technology doesn’t work on your outdated OS.

THANKS! Worked perfectly.. Mytouch 3g running cyan 6 … I think I am officially a nerd. I rooted my phone flashed a rom os and am now tethering on my laptop with this driver installation in the last 2 days… Yay me.. of course as soon as I accomplish all of this I read that Mytouch 3g users are to start recieving the 2.2 update starting today Oct 13 and everyone should have it by the 25. FML
Nothing happens when I connect my phone to my laptop.. It used to pop up saying there was a data connection, but no more..
Same thing here – any ideas yet?
New hardware wizard does not open. What could be wrong?
I don’t even get portable hotspots on my setting view
only tether and it is not highlighted
It is not working at all!!!!
Hi all – the first time I tried this, I couldn’t make it work. Recently, as is today, I had trouble sharing my android as a hotspot, so I tried the usb tethering again. This time, having already downloaded the xptether file onto my desktop, I plugged my phone in (while it was on), selected usb tether on the phone, made sure “activesync” was turned off on the xp computer (i have an htc hd2 running android). I opened up “system” in the control panel in winxp, saw the ‘android” usb item, right clicked it, selected update the driver, told it to use the file on the desktop, gave it time to update the driver- which it did successfully. then, i reopened firefox, and voila! it worked. Oddly enough neither the wired nor wireless icons are “un”x”d”. But, I’m not going to argue with success. It might be that this worked because effectively both my phone and my computer had been turned off and then back on again after the first go around. GL everyone!! I’m happy!
Finally, something that works and allows me to tether my rooted Nexus One on Windows XP. However, I already have SDK tools installed. But this fix lets tethering work over a USB cable. Thank you!
Windows XP not taking tetherxp.inf driver.
yeh …true Raj…its just not taking .inf driver…tried everyting by the book…sad doesn’t really work
Hi! It’s an honor to know that you are not alone in your beliefs in anyway. It’s sad to feel so alone in the world you believe to be the rightful one for you. But then, browsing through your site gave me a reason to stand back. Sometimes it’s not what other people think of, but it’s what you are showing them that makes them say you are right and suddenly you’d find out someone is really right by your side. Thanks for sharing such wonderful thoughts.

As of March 6, 2013, I have edited tetherxp.inf to run on WinXP as a network adapter and successfully tether usb internet to my Samsung phone, along with all the previous versions of Android included in the original tetherxp. You can email me at info@sunbirdgroup.us and I will send you the tetherxp-1.inf along with complete installation instructions. It works really well, in fact, I am in my farm house out in the woods typing this on my XP laptop from 2007, tethered to my Samsung Galaxy.
