To infinity and beyond on an Evo

Meet Danny Pier. He’s just like you or I, but with one specific idea: to send his HTC Evo into space. To clarify, we’re not talking about deep space, just a little trip to the earth’s stratosphere.  Danny’s goal is for his small step to pave the way for bigger steps towards space exploration in the private sector, that his idea will ignite ideas in other people.

The recently outlined future of NASA puts a man landing on Mars in 2035 and scraps plans for a return to the moon. I find that a big bummer, man. Without a space race, the hopes of extrateresstrial exploration are no longer on the shoulders of government but on the drive and ingenuity of entrepreneurs. Why not get started taking with a spark like this. Who knows what it may ignite.

Granted, the idea of sending something into space is not new. Mr. Pier is expanding past former ideas utilizing technology currently available.  Using features already available on the HTC Evo: GPS, HD video, camera, Danny just needs to write a program to link the three apps together, then send his phone up with a balloon or balloons, and some appropriate casing.

Keeping with the Android community spirit, Danny intends to release the code for his project once it’s complete. In the meantime, he has set up a page at Kickstarter to help fund his project, named Astdroid. If you think Danny has a worthwhile idea and want to toss a few bucks his way, you can check out his page and read more about Astdroid.
