While looking through Twitter for any interesting Android developments, I spotted this tweet from DroidNinja:

Could it be T-Mobile is getting ready to officially put the G1 to bed? It wouldn’t surprise me, given the age of the phone and their months of silence on if the device would ever get Android 2.1. On the other hand, they could just be clearing out old stock to make way for some new arrivals.

What do you think, does the G1 have some shelf life left in it still?

Someone should lullaby the G1 to sleep. Goodnight and goodbye.

Yeah, its done. All the accessories are indeed marked down, and there are none to be had in any of the corporate stores. Its not an available replacement for warranty exchanges (they are offering the Cliq as an alternate) and even Asurion is out (they are offering either the Cliq or the myTouch 1.2- sorry, no Slide). It will be missed. It was one of my favorite phones to use and sell.

I have a G1 and can honestly say I love my phone, ONLY because of ROMs like SuperbadCM5, Cyanogen 5.0.8 and SuperE. I have learned a tremendous deal about android due to me rooting the G1. I think it can hold it’s own, solely if someone knows how to modify it properly. It is by far the most common android phone I see around, but very few people who own one have root/android 2.1 on it.

So I say it’s only worth it if you know what you are doing (or like to tool around). Otherwise, go with something a little newer. I just got my girlfriend a mytouch slide for tmobile’s free phone day, and she absolutely loves it. I’m not a fan of the sense UI tho. If I had a mytouch, I’d be rooting that shit anyway! I’m pinching my pennies for a nexus one (or something better in due time). In the meantime, my G1 is as functional (and more customizable) as her mytouch slide, so it foots the bill just fine.

I second that. I would not have learnt so much about Android if it was not for my G1 and rooting… Even though its 1st generation, it still packs alot of punch, thanks to dev community… G1 = The Godfather of Androids..

Tis true, the G1 is one of the best phones that taught us ALL alot about the android OS. I like the Godfather part:) I carry the G1 (rooted) and the Droid (not rooted) and to be honest, I still use my G1 more. I snatched a second one up about 6 months ago to test on b4 actually putting it on my main use G1. I find that there are a lot of roms that do well and then some that don’t do well. Bugs I can deal with, battery drain and heating up just from sitting there, forget that! The G1 will last for a long time, or till i spill liquid on it and go for the insurance ;) (Hope it’s true that there’s no insurance replacements out there!)

@ jim. For the record, the G1 should be honored as the flagship that paved the way for Android to become the #2 O.S in the world, and will soon hit #1. I develop apps for android, and most developers, coders, and the community alike got their start with the G1. Yes, its time to retire it, but give tribute to to Father of all Droids!!!

I feel the same way as the last ppl who posted. Love my G1 and am saving up to get a Nexus One. Did however send an e-mail to HTC to remake the G1 like they have with the My Touch to the 1.2/Fender and yet again to the Slide. Suggested that it be called the G1squared( squared symbol) and give it the same full 5 row qwerty keyboard but with a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor (or faster) and more internal storage. To bring it up to speed. Especially since it was the first phone to introduce the world to Android, to freedom of opensource, versatility, and the real freedom to make a phone yours with themes, ROM’s, and make it unique from others like it. So if they do decide to retire the G1 then one can only hope it is because they are replacing it with a newer upgrade of it. Long live the G1!

The G1 is legendary, I own a nexus one now but a lot of the things I do with my nexus all started with the G1. I plan on keeping it to show the future android users what the original looked like. I’m addicted to and in love with android because of my G1. Hell it even introduced me to the linux box I have at home now. The best phone to pave the way to greatness!

I’ve owned a G1 since November 2008, and been looking for a replacement the last 6 months – not because there’s anything wrong with the G1, except I would like some more punch CPU and RAM wise. I guess what I’m waiting for is the new Android flagship.

So far I haven’t found a handset complying with my wishes:

    >1Ghz CPU
    >3.7″ high res screen
    >5MP camera
    full QWERTY
    >512 MB Flash
    >512 MB RAM
    GSM compatible

In addition to other “nice to have” stuff; 4G (GSM), RDS FM radio, built in AVI/Divx support, HD video rec, 802.11n, and everything else available in today’s new top-of-the-line handsets counting from Nexus One and forward

Have I missed a candidate, or do I have to keep looking?

I got my G1 december 2008…and I LOVED IT!! i still remember when i first updated it to cupcake manually a whole month before the OTA. I finally grew the balls to root it back in october. I want to upgrade to a newer android, but they haven’t made one to truly replace the G1 :( But as long as Cyanogen and SuperD&E keep making ROMS for the G1, I’m good to go for maybe another year without upgrading. HTC seriously need to remake a newer G1. None of the newer androids have anything unique about them. The G1 slides up so cool :) and the keyboard feels good too. I just love everything about it….except “the no headphone jack idea” (but thats why i have an ipod anyway, so who cares)

still rocking my g1. don’t think i’ll be able to get rid of it when i do finally upgrade. and yes, there is still life left to it. just tried a very beta froyo rom based off of cyan’s work. this phone can still fly thanks to him & his team!

Yeah I got my G1 still.. I’m also eligable for a full upgrade… but why would I? For the MyTouch Slide? Nope. I’m gonna wait for something wayy better than that. IMO the MTS is not a good enough replacement for my G1. I also agree HTC should create a new G1 .. in fact I was just talking to my girlfriend about it earlier.

Is Froyo gonna run faster than Eclair? Is this true? If so, screw upgrading to a new phone anyway. I currently run 2.1 on my G1 but it’s not as fast as I’d like .. like all the 1.6 roms.
