There are many advantages to rooting your device. One of my favorite, next to switching ROMs, is tethering. It has come in handy so many times on road trips. If you’re like a lot of people, (and myself for a long time) you are scared to death to make a mistake and ruin your phone trying to root. Not a problem with Samsung Kies. It’s already built in to the device, just not readily known about. As always I’m sure the carriers may plug this up on the next update that rolls out so root may be needed at a later date. Until then, anyway, here’s how you do it.
- Go HERE to download and install the software for your PC.
- On your phone go to Menu > Settings > Applications > USB settings > Samsung Kies.
- Plug your phone into the PC and you will get a screen that shows a USB plug.
- Open the Kies application.
- It should start to connect your device like in the video below.
- Once connected you may need to install the drivers if prompted.
- For tethering simply select tether.
- In the APN field type: epc.tmobile.com
- In the phone number field type: *99#
- Select OK, then click the connect button, wait for it to confirm internet connection and you are all set.
Here’s a video demonstrating how to perform the same steps.
Side note: I spent a lot of time trying to get the phone to connect. After much troubleshooting, rebooting and reinstalling, I was finally able to get it to work. This step should only apply if you already installed the drivers from Samsung prior to installing KIES. Right click on My Computer > Select Properties > Devise Manager > Go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Right click on Samsung Android USB Composite Device > Select uninstall. Once the drivers are uninstalled, re-open KIES and it will auto install all the correct drivers and a few minutes later connect to the phone. I was able to find that solution HERE. So any problems getting this working, that’s a good location for information.
The Kies application has many more functions built into it, many of which seem very useful and pretty exciting. Most of you that go through this process for tether will discover what is built in and no doubt be excited about the application. Please share what other things you love about KIES.

These Windows-only solutions are useless for Linux users. Rooting the phone is still required unless you’ve paid the Microsoft computer tax.

How about for Mac please help I have a macbook pro
I would love to help you out there.. i’ll take a look and see if there is anything I can find. Mac is great but so many things are windows based, I hate it too.. I love mac and Linux, but I can’t do enough on either.
Stormy: It’s easy to do it all on Linux if you avoid buying things that only work with Windows. I’ve been linux-only for most of a decade and there really isn’t anything I need Windows for….even if it means rooting my phone to make a full-functional AP supporting multiple connected devices instead of some proprietary single-tether option for Windows.
I often find I can do more going the open source way….but yes…it does mean I have to think sometimes. At 52 years of age I have come to realise that being willing to think puts me in a small minority outside the mainstream. I didn’t want to believe it for a long time….but the daily evidence of my own eyes across decades forced me to accept most people would rather accept limitations rather than think about how to overcome them.

Does this work on any of the other Samsung Galaxy variants?
As far as I know. It is used for the Galaxy S I9000 overseas. since the settings are in all the variants I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I only have access to a Vibrant at this time. As long as the other variants have the Samsung KIES under the settings I advised to set there should be no reason it wouldn’t.

Just another reason why this phone is at the top of the android food chain.

I would have to agree with LinuxLuver. Linux helps me tremendously! It’s gnacky at first, but once you learn the simple nomenclature of change, you’ll love it. Windows is bloated and drab. I like Android for Linux and I like Linux for Linux
