There is a lot of rumors floating around about which device will be T-Mobile’s first HSPA+ device. The MyTouch HD, HTC Desire HD, HTC Vision/G1 Blaze come to mind when each of us try to predict T-Mobile’s next big device. According to a source, the first HSPA+ release from T-Mobile will be the HTC Vision/G1 Blaze, but in honor of the T-Mobile G1 which was recently retired, the device will be called the HTC G2. The HSPA+ site has already gone live so an announcement must be coming soon. Our source also informed us that the processor for the HTC G2 will be 800MHz and not the 1GHz that was previously rumored for this device. The device will also be running the stock Vanilla UI on top of Froyo. Our source doesn’t think that the information could change, but we all know how that works. We must reiterate, rumors are nothing more than what they are, just rumors.

Do you think that the HTC G2 is as innovative and unique and worthy enough to be called the G2? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Very awesome! Long live the G1-style design. Love my Vibrant, but this still looks like a great update to the G1

Oh c’mon, no 1ghz snapdragon? they still fail to give us a highend android with a qwerty, why HTC? Why?!? Get with the godamn program and give us qwerty lovers something to brag about.

    • yasuya

I believe that the processor in question may be a dual core, if that is the case then an 800 mhz will still outperform a 1 ghz single core… but I could be wrong. I may just be hoping.

What happened T-Mobile, you got us all hooked to QWERTY keyboards with the sidekicks. MDA’s and the G1 which were all high end devices when they came out now the best we can get is a 800mhz G2. Letdown! Its bad enough its a 4 row. I get that froyo is optimized and increases proformance, but a Turbo charged 4 Banger is still a 4 Banger. Granted this is more like a V6. But you get what I’m saying.

This is, imo, definatelly NOT worthy to be the official successor of the G1. It doesn’t offer innovation, exclusivity, or uniqueness. More of the same, but a little less than the rest. Dissapointment…

Hold on guys. I seem to remember a rumor a little while ago that the phone would be running 800 mhz but that it was supposed to be a dual core. That would make powerful than a galaxy s I would imagine.

I agree with Kenny, Only Loki and steelandroid definitely a disappointment and not worthy in my book. Espesically this far into the game with a 1GHZ processor almost seems to be mandatory. And like Only Loki said that 4 row qwerty doesn’t make any sense at all.

800 mhz DUAL CORE though? I thought that was the rumor… if not, I’m sorely disappointed.

Hopefully T-Mo came harder than this. To date, their most powerful phones have been the Nexus One or the Vibrant. It would be disappointing to see them release a phone for their amp’d up network to only be [slightly] above average. I can’t understand why it’s so hard for them to market powerhouse handsets like all the other major carriers.

I don’t know why everyone is bitching for. You ask for a good high end phone that run fast with hspa+ with a keyboard and stock. Also they give you not one but 2 HD phone with FC on it also hspa+ high end phone. Tmo give it to u and all u have to show for it is bitching about what else is not on it. Everyone want this and that but people don’t want to pay for this and that. Shit are galaxy s is 199 look at sprint there is 249 after mail in rebate and 100 instead saving. All for a keyboard and fc. And look at what the dell streak cost. So stop bitching and enjoy it and stop f-em it up for other.

Just statement ya opinion and go bitch!

Definitely not worthy of being the successor of my G1 smh :( The G2 needs to be as innovative and unique as the G1 was, and STILL is. It doesn’t have to be a powerhouse. I just want something new with a GREAT keyboard that rivals the G1. That’s why I haven’t upgraded to the Mytouch, Cliq, Vibrant, or Mytouch Slide yet. G1 FTW

plus you can’t say they’ve given us what we wanted, many people have asked for a 5 row qwerty that rivals or is on par with the G1 and to this day it hasn’t been provided, all we get are these 4 row POS. reason i jumped shipped from my sidekick to the G1 was because of the keyboard. i think that with a 4″ screen a 5 row qwerty is more than manageable. C’mon T-mo you just won your 2nd in a row customer satisfaction award, make it count.

You guys complaining about a Ghz processor need to keep in mind that android doesn’t need that speed to function, 800mhz its fast enough IMO especially running froyo. Plus it will be overclocked by the devs i’m sure. Just give me froyo or gingerbread and I’m happy!!

    Tmobile,
qwerty, htc, dual cameras with flash, sense ui, android, top notch processor. If you do these six things you will make money. Please reconsider the G2 if this is all it is going to be.

I encourage you guys to go to your local T-Mobile store and play around with a Touch Pro 2. It’s a Winmo device, but, toss in a capacitive screen, a Snapdragon (or two?), and 512-768 MB RAM and it’s the best Android device ever.
The phone was the last HTC phone that I felt still had the quality feel to it. It’s heavy, stiff, and sturdy, but very comfortable in the hands and the tilting screen is innovative enough where, tossing Android on it, would warrant it as a worthy successor to the G1. Plus, the keyboard is heaven. Test it and I assure you, you’ve never used a better keyboard before.
Even after I got my HD2, I miss my Rhodium, and chose the Leo instead only because of the capacitive touch screen and better processor/memory (both devices can run Android, though not perfect).
So, I suggest you spam HTC and DEMAND that they make a high-end Android variant of the Rhodium hardware for T-Mobile US.

    More Rumors,

I have read that when this device is finalized, it will have no physical keyboard and it will have a front facing camera. If that is true, i want it. However, i have also read that there will be minimum standards for an upgrade to gingerbread. One of them is that the device must have a 1ghz processor. so if this article is accurate, i wont touch this device.

To be honest, I think the device is worthy of a G2 title. Not because it is especially innovative, but because it bears a similar simplistic design and as it would seem is similarly under-whelming. The processor may not be as powerful as other phones out there, just like the G1. It is missing some obvious newer features that a luxury phone should have (LED flash, Bluetooth HID and DUN support, USB tethering straight out of the box. All features I had grown accustomed to back in the days of my MDA! talk about a disappointment!). It reminds me a lot of the g1 just because it is super hyped, but really kind of mediocre in features. Granted I’ll probably buy one because HSPA+ is more important to me than a pretty screen or raw processing power. It is a versatile phone. Just like the G1. It will do everything you need, albeit not as prettily as a vibrant when it comes to video. Maybe not as quickly as a nexus 1 when it comes to processing benchmarks. But I use my phone to tether a lot so I want to take advantage of HSPA+ asap, and with fat thumbs like mine, I really like a tactile, slide out keyboard so I’m not constantly mistyping on the touch screen, even with swype which is quite accurate, if I am away from my computer and cant use ADB to do something in the shell, I like to have that full qwerty so that I can type commands into the terminal emulator. (sure there are some TE programs that support on screen keyboards, but I’ve already discussed my fat thumbs.) Speaking of the keyboard, this may be the one deciding factor deeming it unworthy of the G2 title. in my opinion, there needs to be a distinction between qwerty keyboards and 123456 keyboards since the G1 clearly had that 5th row which so many of us have found so useful. I thought it looked a bit superfluous at first, but oh how wrong i was. granted I could probably re-accustom my self to pushing that little alt button to get my numbers again, the question remains… why should I? especially when it has been shown that better hardware is available and practical in the form of the G1. Compared to my MDA, I glide along whilst typing on my G1. Why take a step backwards?

Worthiness aside I believe there is one more issue at hand in officially naming this device the G2. The same obstacle that popped up when T-mo was naming the My-touch. It was originally set to be called the G2 as well, but when they applied for the trademark license, it was already taken by the sports drink Gatorade G2. So unless some kind of legal (read financial) agreement has been reached between the two companies, the brand G2 is still off limits to T-Mobile. :-(

I agree, this NEEDS to have an 8MP rear (with a flash!), 1.3MP front facing camera, >1Ghz processor, more RAM, “Gingerbread-ready” otherwise it is a true FAIL. T-Mobile users have been waiting for a while for that Evo/Epic4G/iphone competitor, if it does not alteast MEET these specs, it is a loss.
