Enable WiFi and USB Tethering on Your Samsung Captivate

19

If you want to use your Captivate as a Wireless Access point so you can surf the web from your PC through your AT&T Samsung Captivate phone, user designgears on XDA has the applications for you. Jr33 originally convert the Access Point application from the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 to the Samsung Vibrant.  designgears then tweaked the kernel for the Captivate to allow the wlp2pservice to run, which is required by mobileAP and disabled by ATT. The mod also enables the USB Tethering functionality.

As we do not have an AT&T  Samsung Captivate to test, we cannot validate any of the information in this post.  Performing this modification could damage your phone. We are not responsible for any problems that may occur.

Here’s what he has to say:

All firmware versions are supported!

MobileAP and Usb Tethering!
MobileAP is native WiFi Tethering ported from Galaxy S i9000
Infrastructure AP
USB Tethering Enabled

This will require flashing a custom kernel with Odin.
if you are running the 1.2ghz overclocked kernel, this will overwrite it.
No wake up lag!

Download and unzip the included file…

How to flash:
Plug in your usb cable
Open Odin3_v1.0.exe
Enter download mode
Select the PIT file and the PDA file
Click Start

It will automatically reboot. (it will go into recovery mode, let it do its thing, then reboot)

Now use Rom Manager to flash signed-mobileap.captivate.zip

After it reboots, goto:: Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP settings

Enjoy

Oh, here is the download link!

I have a Captivate, but it’s only a week old, so I don’t think I’ll be replacing the kernel right now. This’ll have to go into my archive of “what to do when it’s time to get a new phone”.

  2. Well, At least you know you have the option when you get to a point where this will be useful to you! I wish I had a captivate to try this out. Be interesting to see what kind of performance you can get out of it through your computer.

Actually, I just tried an app called Barnacle Wifi Legacy. It requires root, but it’s free and lets you create an Ad-hoc WiFi network for tethering. You can pick the name, WEP security key (or just leave the network open), DHCP settings, etc, and it works pretty well. AT&T’s 3G network being slow (with 4 generations of iphone users and the ipad), the speed isn’t great, but it’s more than sufficient for chat and some web browsing from my laptop.

A word of caution with tethering and the Captivate, though: the largest data plan you can get on AT&T is 2GB a month. That’s plenty for the phone itself, but I know lots of people (myself included) who will suck up 2GB in a day or two on a normal computer. Be careful with what’s using your internet connection while you’re tethered.

Hey, I updated the post if you want to quote the new stuff… missed a credit late lastnight and the guy was pretty upset about it…

Jr33 modded the original MobileAP for vibrant, which is what this is based on.

  5. Bobby says:

barnacle and android-wifi-tether are hacky at best… this is true Infrastructure AP, and you can do all the same setup from the settings. Password, ap name, broadcast ssid or not, etc…

  6. rowanator says:

Yeah, a kernel replacement doing this better than a root app doesn’t surprise me at all. I just don’t want to wipe my new, shiny phone yet. :D

  7. Bobby says:

You don’t have to wipe it, it just flashes a new kernel, everything is left as it was. You can also do a nandroid backup just to be sure :)

  8. The article has been updated.
    Thanks for the feedback :)

  9. rowanator says:

I guess I could, but Barnacle works well enough for me since I don’t often have enough time to pull out my laptop (where I don’t already have internet access, that is) and use it for something I can’t do straight from the phone. Having a Captivate almost defeats the need for tethering in the first place. :-)

I waited 5 months before I rooted my first Android phone. The FEAR kept me in line. My second Android phone, I waited a week. My third Android phone was rooted before the sun went down. If you’re an AT&T customer and rooting the phone sees you get all the latest updates faster while retaining all original function AND gaining new features and functions AT&TT won’t allow you…..then the rational mind roots the phone ASAP. Only the fear would get in the way. I’ve found locally that a rooted phone with additional function, actually has better re-sale value.

The only reason you might not root is if you want to sell the phone with a warranty (ie: soon after buying it) and it is impossible to return the phone to stock state. If those don’t apply….then only the fear is getting in the way.

Once past the fear…it’s all golden.

If it was a clockwork mod yes odin no to many have bricked there samsungs so untill there is a mod that works with clockwork i will say no ! By the way there is a mod go to xda it works with clockwork !

  12. Bobby says:

There is nothing but Odin that can flash the kernel. You can’t fully brick your phone with Odin, worst case you will have to use one of the many key/usb combos to get into download mode and try to flash again or flash stock.

  13. Barry Chase says:

Has anyone used PDANet ? It seems to work great for me without the need to change the kernel. The only reason I might flash the kernel at this point is to A) Fix the GPS and B) Overclock the processor. Both of which I will try and wait for A) Fix from Samsung that AT&T will release and B) 2.2 Upgrade through natural channels which might negate the need for Overclocking.

  14. Bobby says:

PDANet is awful, at lease use android-wifi-tether… lol

I found a way to do this without a custom kernel, updating later today.

  15. rowanator says:

Oh, I rooted it 3 days after I got it. I just don’t want to replace the kernel right now (bigger hack, and I have no reason to).

  16. that would be awesome if you found a way to use android-wifi-tether without modifying the kernel. Keep us updated :)

It won’t let me download ANY of those files to my phone. How do I get it to download and work? If you could please contact me at adams90crx@msn.com I would appreciate it. Would even be willing to paypal you some money if this works.
