The Android mobile operating system—specifically, smartphones running it—is continuing a steady climb in mobile web market share versus Apple’s iOS-based devices. Quantcast has published new statistics that reveal that the Android increase in August is still more a trickle than a blow-out, but a gain for Google nevertheless.
Last month’s statistics put iOS devices on top of the U.S. share of mobile web consumption at 56 percent to Android’s 23. Other devices tracked by Quantcast came in third at 11 percent, with RIM devices pulling up last-place at ten percent. The growth over the past year has been steadily Android’s however: RIM and “other” devices have, for the most part, flatlined on their mobile web traffic, and the web use on iOS devices has suffered most to suffer from Android’s growth.
The recently released August statistics from Quantcast show that Apple has managed to stave off major losses for the time being. Mobile web use for iOS devices (iPad excluded) dropped an indecipherable amount, remaining at 56 percent, with both RIM and “other” devices dropping down to 9 percent and ten percent respectively. Android web consumption has jumped up two percent to 25, its best gain since November of 2009.
Pulling out to a yearly view, Android has now gained 18.6 percent in web consumption share, mainly pilfering the attention away from Apple’s iOS devices (down 11.4 percent). RIM has managed to most consistently weather Android’s growth by losing only 1.6 percent of its web market share throughout the same time period.
Quantcast plans to break the August web consumption details out by vendor sometime next week. However, last month’s statistics put Apple’s iPhone on top of the market at 36 percent, with the company’s iPod line of devices—the iPod Touch, specifically—trailing at 20 percent. HTC is the first Android vendor to appear on the chart with 11 percent of total smartphone web consumption, though Motorola—at 10 percent—isn’t far behind.
As well, web use on Motorola devices has grown significantly over the past year, more so than any other smartphone manufacturer category. Apple’s iPhone and iPod lines have given up seven and 3.4 percent of their mobile web market shares respectively, and Motorola is currently topping HTC with a yearly growth of ten percent to the latter’s 3.9.

Android is great. but, given the fact that the iPhone has a faster processor and bigger screen, and front facing camera, and the general effort that apple puts into their hardware designs. I would expect the Android to be much cheaper than that. I’m an a long-user iphone user. I think iphon is more better than BlackBerry, Android.
