T-Mobile G2 to Bring Wi-Fi Calling but No Tethering Support

The T-Mobile G2 launch is just around the corner and lately we’ve been hearing more and more about what this device has to offer. According to these leaked T-Mobile images, it’s looking like the G2 will feature Wi-Fi calling which we recently learned is a possible feature on the upcoming LG Optimus.

While UMA support has its benefits, it also has its disadvantages. With Wi-Fi calling, once you lose range of your Wi-Fi network, your device will not automatically pick up your call using your mobile network so the call will be dropped.

T-Mobile has come out and said that tethering will not be featured on the T-Mobile G2 and as we know the tethering feature is available with Android 2.2; carriers have the final say so on whether or not they’ll allow that feature. T-Mobile issued the following statement regarding tethering:

“T-Mobile does not currently support handset tethering or offer a tethering rate plan. Though tethering and Wi-Fi sharing will not be initially supported on the T-Mobile G2, we know that consumers are interested in these features and we are working to develop a solution to support them in the future.”

One of the advantages T-Mobile customers have is at least T-Mobile acknowledges this requested feature, so maybe in the near future we’ll see an OTA update allowing tethering on the G2, but we’re sure the Android development community will have something for us not too long after the device launches. How many of you regularly use the tethering feature?

I think it’s a good start for Tmo in wifi calling although limited. Tethering is very important for us techies and even though I am disappointed it’s not offered I can’t pretend I’m at all surprised. @Caesar your right about that brother!

  7. Brians Android

Wi-Fi Calling would be great for me! However I was looking forward to tethering when the net work is upgraded. I would have been able to use my laptop on the go for short quick task. I have a rooted G1 but the battery life has always sucked which is making me lean towards a BlackBerry, but T mobile dos not have one that supports there new network yet.
