Most people are familiar with the ADW Launcher by AnderWeb, especially after it was integrated into the CyanogenMOD project. ADW Notifier is a nifty little add-on that adds one simple but infinitely useful feature to the launcher: little red bubbles on certain specific icons. These red bubbles (see pictures below) always show a number, but depending on the icon, it means different things. For example, the first picture below shows my Gmail icons with a 1 in the bubble, which would signify 1 unread message, but a 1 over the dialer means the number of missed calls, unread tweets over Touiteur, etc. Autokiller is my favorite, as it actually shows the amount of free RAM.
AnderWeb is actively developing this add-on, and is adding support for new applications such as the recent addition of the popular third-party email client, K9Mail. As an active ADW Launcher user, I find this add-on quite useful, especially as more application support is added, and certainly worth the $.69 cents. I’ve been using it since it was in beta, and I actually find myself reluctant to switch Launchers now because I like the feature so much. I highly recommended it to ADW Launcher users. A simple yet useful addition to an already feature-loaded launcher.

I think the HTC sense doesn’t something similar to this at least with messaging not sure about any other icons.
Launcher pro has always had this feature but for dock bar for calls, email and sms.
And again we are just copying iPhone stuff and are not even considering the design-choice of apple :/
And since this a ADW Launcher only feature it also introduces some real fragmentation.
Android has by far the best notification system. Stick to it!
I really dont want to scroll through my menu or my 7 home screens to check if there are updates. One central site for all notifications and some indicators on the status bar. Perfect.
