According to a thread post in XDA and subsequent conversations, it looks like T-Mobile’s G2 has permanent root now. Developers have successfully written to the system area of the T-Mobile G2 and made it stick so it doesn’t get overwritten on reboot.
We say … FINALLY!
We still have to see some real proof that this is true, but the guys on XDA are all talking about it.
UPDATE 1: Looks like they got it to stick once and key players are working hard to reproduce it. Stay tuned as we try to follow the progress
UPDATE 2: You can also view the IRC chat log to find the latest updates
All we need now is some of the existing ROMs to get converted for the new method or the installation routines for the root to be made public and we should be good to go.
Have you heard anything else about the root on the T-Mobile G2? Let us know in the comments below!

hoax
I think you need to follow the facts
It has happened, but unable to be reproduced so far
It’s actually not quite there yet, but it’s very close. Not stable. One dude has been able to write to /system and get it to stick ONCE. The key players in the process are trying to duplicate it now and make it more stable.
Way to jump on the story first though XD

its not a hoax if you follow the IRC channel #G2ROOT they have actually done it. there just making the method at this point more stable and from the looks of it its been duplicated more then once so its def real. just gonna take time for everything to be mapped out and instructions as well as the screenshots everyone wants to see to be put up. Congrats to the Devs it was fun to watch
What credibility does this “dude” have? What are the odds he just made a mistake?
PENICILLIN was discovered by mistakes. So was the MICROWAWE OWEN, and Cheese…etc..
if it was a mistake, it doesn’t make it any less important… the guy worked for months on the crack.
Does it make you feel less significant by dissing the guy?
If I’m not mistaken all S-OFFs will be exploited by the same or a related exploit, there has been photo proof of s-off for the espresso(MT3gSLD) but that also remains private ATM.
This reminds me of some smartcard tinkering that was of my many past hobbies, often exploits are so easy to fix that if shown the light of day could be patched very quickly.
Let’s hope we see them all soon, id love to have a real recovery
jesus rose from the dead, but he hasn’t come back yet either

“13:47 tmzt_dg2root it a kernel module, once loaded the full /system and possibly recovery, hboot etc. should be writable
13:48 tmzt_dg2root we are trying to confirm that now and use a modified recovery and hboot”
From the IRC chat logs. That was just about 15 minutes ago. I’m willing to bet we’ll have confirmation within the hour. And hopefully CM6.1 later today

This is no hoax- several credible devs are testing as we speak. I’m sure the how-to’s will be up on XDA a bit later.
Confirmed working for several phones.
People are already flashing the Engineering HBOOT for the G2.
