Full 3D UI coming to Android. Sorry ADW, I might just Switch

71

We all love eye candy when it comes to how our devices looks and feels when we are using it. HTC Sense UI has been one of the most visually appealing UIs to date in my opinion. Some have loved Motoblur and even Touch Wiz. If none of those appealed to you then you probably moved on to Launcher Pro, ADWLauncher, Home++ or one a few others that do exist. I think any of us with a higher end device are ready to unleash its true graphical power. Why not also make it useful and extremely customizable right?

SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 is on the horizon. If you are unfamiliar with SPB Mobile Shell, then you may not have ever owned a powerful Windows Mobile device. Previous versions of this software were religiously used by users of the HD2. Not only was it a more functional UI for the device but it also solved oodles of freezing and lag issues that people were experiencing.

You may have already seen the demo of the this software. As we all know though, new Android users are added daily and deserve a look into what is coming. Here is a short video of  the new SPB Mobile Shell 5.0. I still can’t locate a launch date unfortunately. As soon as I find out I will be sure announce it for everyone. I am really looking forward to this software.

Do you think this will replace your current launcher?

Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.

Yeah, ok. Wow. That is pretty freaking cool. Looking forward to seeing/hearing more on this including price and compatibility with EVO.

  2. Syco2020 says:

Oh yes I will switch in a heartbeat. First….

Bad Ass! When is this coming for Android?

awsome, more fragmentation. i”m so happy. but i’ll use it on my android if google buys it/makes it default.

    • PaulC says:

how is this fragmentation? Am I missing something? Does this impact the OS and cause applications to be rewritten?

    • Why would this cause fragmentation? This is a launcher replacement, just like ADW or Launcher Pro.

      • Matt says:

No it is not. It is similar to the UI of Sense or TouchWiz or Motoblur. It is not simply a launcher replacement and is not for end users. This is a framework for manufacturers and will never be seen on the Android Market.

        • Cody Suiters says:

Seems to me as if it loads widgets already made for those apps and just adds an option to auto load it. As he said most will work like that… therefore some (in this case ones without a widget) won’t show that option. It is just a launcher replacement if you ask me.

        • Matt says:

Did SPB ask you? No. So it is not a launcher replacement. You can say it is all you want but the FACT is it is not a launcher replacement. Just because it has widgets doesn’t mean it is simply a launcher replacement. Does Sense have widgets? Does TouchWiz? Yes. Both do. But are they simply launcher replacements? No. Your logic fails. This will never be seen on the Android Market. It might be an overlay on a device in the future but don’t get your hopes up for installing this or anything similar to it as an app anytime in the near future.

        • The dude with the plan says:

Okay, I’m tired of reading you going on like this and tearing apart everyone who calls it a launcher replacement. What proof do you have that it is NOT a launcher replacement? It looks to me like it could be classified as either one, and if it is something that can be added to the phone after-market, then it would be closer to a home replacement application then a built in UI. Maybe if I see manufacturers putting this on their phones without SPB being released as a public download I’ll get on board with you. Until then, ease up on people who are giving their own personal opinions just because you absolutely need to be right all the time. Stupid trolls…

    • apparently you have no idea what your talking about. A simple launcher app causes no fragmentation.

However, it’s safe to say that this will only run on high end android phones.

Sorry ADW, I’m switching as soon as this is available.

I used SPB Mobile Shell for a good while back in my WinMo days. Honestly its the single most important improvement that made some WinMo funs even usable. It even improved on performance on WinMo devices. Especially the ones that had the laggy HTC UI. My question is will this do the same for android or actually bog it down. Waiting to find out.

  8. Al Nonymous says:

No thanks. Looks like an over engineered, see what I can do, piece of software.

  9. Shawn Gwilliams says:

Hopefully they won’t forget about live wallpaper support.

  10. Nagrom says:

    That is absolutely STUNNING!!!
Tried pretty much all the laucnhers, but so far nothing has beat LauncherPro Plus for me…….

    Till now.

    When is it due out?
Hope it doesn’t lag on the Desire.

  11. thats pretty incredible, i think i still prefer the default android setup (through launcher pro anyway) but some of these additions are amazing. especially the folders. I’d pay just to have those folders on any launcher.

  12. Soapinmouth says:

Its funny how if a dev makes a launcher like this its “cool” and if a manufacturer makes it then its stupid bloatware that needs to be removed. Either way though I’m more looking forward To slick ui

  13. zerofire01 says:

Thinkin that ima stick with ADW anyways. not that it’s a bad launcher but im way more into the original look of android.

  14. Matt says:

This is not a launcher people. It will NOT be available on the Android Market like ADW and LauncherPro. This is more like HTC Sense or Samsung TouchWiz. It is not for the end user, it is for manufacturers. STOP GETTING YOUR HOPES UP.

  15. I’m switching like yesterday! That is nice I don’t care what anyone has to say…can’t wait for it to drop

  16. Lakers3408 says:

Can’t wait… I hate vanilla android, having the ability to change your phone to your needs and liking is what makes android so popular. Imagine if every android phone was vanilla android, it would just be a as plain as the iPhone. Thank goodness for Sense, TWize and replacement launchers.

  17. XxKOLOHExX says:

I wonder if this Launcher or w/e you want to call it is battery intensive… 3D on a phone with that much features, just seems kinda like a battery hog , Though I do love it, just worried about the battery :D

    • Lakers3408 says:

Agree, there’s allot going on there… I’m sure it will eat battery like a fat kid eats cake

    • Allen Kiehl says:

When I first saw the video that was one of my first thoughts. Battery life. Hopefully they have optimized it to have great battery life especially all the hard work they have put into it to make it so nice.

  18. LTB says:

An I mistaken or did I see a price of like $30 for it? It’s not that cool.

  19. Kenny says:

It looks very nice but it takes the Android experience away. Sorry if I’m repeating anything anyone has said but I haven’t read any replies.

  20. Anonymous says:

Neat stuff, infact it’s an impressive launcher…but ADW by @anderwebs still rocks.

  21. androidswaggiphonefagg says:

as soon as its leaked on 4shared or xda i will give it a test run on the beautiful screen of the super amoled vibrant but not for my 30 bucks

  22. Taaars says:

  24. Louis Martin says:

omg this is amazing like a brand new phone

  25. Ryan says:

@Matt I don’t see why this can’t be available on the Market. SPB has been making their Shell as an add-on for years, why would this be any different? While you are correct that there are framework elements here, that doesn’t mean that it is completely incompatible within the existing framework. It stands to reason that there will be applications that are SPB Shell aware, and that widgets that conform to their UI Engine will for obvious reasons, only work on SPB Shell, but there isn’t anything that I see that couldn’t be done with what is already in place.

  26. Anonymous says:

A little bloated for me, especially on a small screen. If it was toned down a bit it would look nice on a tablet.

  27. 313dash says:

Man that looks sick ! That why I want an Hd2 but hate the windows! Lol

  28. Xillius200 says:

  30. ThaTruth says:

You know, I could be wrong but this UI is bringing back a memory of the fuzzy video of the new ADW launcher that was posted a few weeks back. I’m a have to go look it up again.

  31. Greg says:

Wow…the 3.5 version is $29.95. I’d hate to see what they are going to ask for this new version. Pricey.

    Email from technical support:

Thank you for your message and interest in SPB Software. Thank you for your interest inthe end user version of SPB Mobile Shel! 5.0. At the moment we released SPB Mobile Shell for OEM and carriers only. If we release SPB Mobile Shel! 5.0 for end users, you’ll be able to install the trial version of SPB Mobile Shel! on your device and try it. Since integration with hardware takes time it was important for us to release an OEM version of SPB Mobile Shel! 5.0 as soon as possible. Our decision to target device manufactures and mobile operators with the initial release doesn’t mean that we are not going to release SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 to end users directly. So far we have not had any announcements regarding SPB Mobile Shel! 5.0 availability for the open market. I am stoked for this. SPB mobile shell was my favorite program when I had my WM phones. I really missed it when I moved over to Android. Really exited to see it coming for this platform.
