The Galapagos tablet is Sharp’s latest venture into the Android tablet scene. They are launching the tablet in two different sizes, a 5.5 inch for 39,800 Yen ($473) which has a screen resolution of 1024 × 600 and a 10.8 inch 54,800 Yen ($642) with a screen resolution of 1366 × 800.
Technically these are not tablets, as sharp is marketing them as eReaders designed to connect to their Galapagos books and publications. The difference is they are running Android. So we can safely call them tablets because they support web browsing, social networking, and Wi-Fi. It does come with the lack of an Android market however. I am sure that will be a solvable issue for the community.
All the information I have gathered from various locations point these devices to strictly be an overseas venture in Japan. Much like there current Android devices. There is a possibility though that Sharp could be looking to bring some of their products stateside someday. Now real word on when that may happen, I don’t see it happening this year anyways.
The devices look pretty good. They ship with all the usual stuff such as a micro SD card, modified Android OS (no confirmation on version) and wireless support for B and G, no N support currently.
