With Gingerbread taking over the news yesterday, it was only a matter of time before the developing community started to bring us bits and pieces of the newest OS. Last night the first port to make its rounds was the new Android Keyboard. There were various versions and attempts to bring this out to us, although most failed. Thanks to a tipster we were pointed in the right direction.

This KB will only work on rooted devices that are currently running Android 2.2. In my case I am running a Samsung Vibrant with Obsidian V5 beta, which is Froyo, and am able to use this modification. Follow the steps below if you want to give this a whirl:
- You MUST be Rooted with ClockWorkMod installed for the Recovery
- MAKE A BACKUP (just in case something goes wrong)
- Download this file HERE
- Place the downloaded file on your SD Card
- Boot into Recovery
- Install the .zip that you just download
- Note: Droid X users in Clockwork go to mounts and storage > mount system > then go and install the .zip
- Reboot
- Go into settings and under “input method” select Android Keyboard
- Done!
NOTES:
- If you experience the miniature keyboard with the Droid X do this:
- Download the free app “LCD Density” from the market.
- Set density to 300 then reboot.
- Set density to 260 then reboot.
- Set density to 240 then reboot.
All credit for this port go to Fabolous from the AndroidForums. Fabolous has made everything work in this version, even the predictive text and the full library. Be sure to go thank him.

1st …..
just downloaded and flashing it…on my rooted G1 running EZterry’s official AOSP 2.2
Tried and it failed with some missing files…
so a rooted g1 will work?:)
doesnt work on mytouchslide running 3rdsense0.50 wont even start
Although I have yet to be able to confirm this yet, I believe this port might only work on the higher end units.
Hmmm… creates bootloop here. Have Rooted Stock ROM 2.2.1 running on MT4G with gr8gorilla’s latest kernel. Restoring through nandroid now.
keeps giving me a FC saying “(process com.android.inputmethod.latin) has stopped working”…umm how to i fix this?
works just fine on my rooted G2 withe the latest Cyanogen rom. Looks great too.
All the update.zip methods I’ve seen to install this are pretty invasive in that they do more than just copy the new keyboard to the device. I’d recommend doing it manually, starting with one of the Gingerbread update.zips.
1) Extract the contents, you should have a directory with system/app and system/lib
2) Remove the previous keyboard
a) adb shell to your device and gain root access
b) Make sure you have read/write access to your system directory
c) cd /system/app
d) ls
i) What you are looking for is *LatinIme*.apk and *LatinIme*.odex files
e) Delete the *LatinIme*.* files identified above, rm *LatinIme*.* should work, but be careful
f) cd /system/lib
g) rm libjni_latinime.so
3) Install the new keyboard
a) cd to where you extracted the above zip
b) Make sure system is remounted r/w
i) You can try to use adb remount
ii) or you can try adb -o remount,rw
c) adb push systemappLatinIME.apk /system/app/
d) adb push systemliblibjni_latinime.so /system/lib/
4) Reboot, change your input method, and enjoy
I have a mytouch 3g slide with CM 6.1 and it’s working great for me. However I linked this on XDA and a couple guys are having a problem.
