Those of us that have been around the block since Android was getting launched remember and probably still use SMS Popup. I thought with the holidays being over and so many new-to-Android users coming online everyday, maybe we should revisit some of the earliest applications.

This application comes in handy particularly on the Galaxy S devices since a lacking feature is an LED notification. I have used this application since the day I bought my G1. What makes this application so great for me is how it work- when a new message come into your phone, your screen turns on and the message is displayed on your phone. This was extremely useful when I worked at T-Mobile. I could glance over and read the message and keep working.
There is a short delay before your screen turns off again, so no fears of it eating up your battery. In the pop up you have options to reply, delete or close. There are lots of customized settings available as well. It is nice to see an application that has been around for two years still be so supported and receive updates still.
If you have never seen this application you can pick it up below.

I love this app. I always have sense the G1. BUT!!!!!! I have lost texts, not received them or had them deleted before i replied due to this app. No this does not happen to everyone, but it does happen. I really wish they would give this app a fresh new UI after these years, but it doesn’t seem like its going to happen.
Definitely a 4’1/2star app.
Been using this app for 2 years, never had any issues with accidental deletions, etc (unless you cant me accidentally deleting the message). Handcent SMS also offers a VERY similar feature.
Great App, even greater pictures LOL
I think that was the single most reason I downloaded it in the first place. She is my future ex wife. LOL Or at least my freebie according to my wife.
Haha Good luck and get in line.
Ha i remember this app… It was a good one, but with comp and handcet, It has become useless…
Do those apps do a pop up too? I have used them both a while back, but the UI drove me nuts, maybe I should mess with them again. I like the stock threading like in the CM builds.
Yeah, I use Handcent and I love it.
I used to use this app, but it was short of only one feature; read sms aloud (without having to press the button) when connected to a A2DP device. Would have been great while driving. Emailed dev, but feature never added, shame really.
Drivesafe.ly and talktome are too big and heavy on data and resources.
SMS Speak is a small little app that will read incoming texts to you as they come in. I’ve used it as long as I’ve had Android.
I have been using Handcent(or whatever its called) for awhile now and it has this feature, I love it.
Really! Handcent blows this out of the water! People still use pop up?
Nice app for its time but there are apps out now that blow this out of the water. I have lost texts with pop up when my phone was in my pocket.
Handcent includes this feature very nicely…plus about 750 other features!
Great app. I still use it, works flawlessly. And btw chompsms/handcent are both excellent examples of how a bloated app should be. :p
I think this app is great for those that want this basic feature without the overload handcent and others have..i personally use han dcent but i can see where this would be great for some people who like to keep it simple
I use this on my Milestone 2, and before on my Milestone 1 and its so useful and easy to use.
