Trojan Horse Finds Its Way to Android

11

A Trojan virus currently named Gemini has found its way onto our Android devices in China, at least that is what’s being reported all over the web. Apparently the antivirus Android application, Lookout, was the firm that identified it.

This could be the first “botnet-like capable” Android malware ever created and unleashed in the wild. It has the ability to connect your device to a remote server and essentially allow someone else control of your device. Once your device is infected, Gemini can send out your location, transmit device information, and even download apps to your device prompting you to install them. They say they have even observed it sending a list of your installed apps to an outside server.

Gemini currently appears to sneak its way in by grafting on to legitimate applications, primarily games, that are download through third party app stores. When you are installing the app it will then ask for a whole slew of  access to your device. Since I know a lot of users are like me, I just hit the OK button to get the install going. Since this is reportedly coming from third party app stores, I would recommend you stick to Google’s Android Market from now on.

Here’s what I don’t get though. Why do people do this? Is it boredom? Lack of anything better to do? Why can’t people that have the talent to do this garbage put it to good use instead of evil? People that hack sites and build Trojan malware and anything else harmful, get a life! Just my 2cents.

Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.

The wife got me a Iphone4 for Christmas, and we just picked her up one yesterday. The whole android thing is just too fragmented, chaotic, time consuming, and now dangerous. Ive had enough.

Why would anyone need to switch to an iphone. All you have to do to your android is delete your background, dolphin hd, and flash. Then tape a picture of an apple on the back and tell everyone you know that it’s the best because its an apple.

    > Ive had enough.

You have succumbed to the iphone fud! You lose!

Comments such as the above make me wish that unix programmers could develop trojans for Apple OS so people can finally stop saying uneducated things like that. i guess the only diffirence is that the talented Unix programmers just have a life like you say and dont bother doing such things making people think Apple is so much better.

yeah..Android is so terrible with its open source and millions of options for customizing. It so much better when devices are locked down completely to prevent users from making mistakes while also preventing them from doing anything useful with their devices!

      Listen you ferry crybaby…….
Its difficult to respond to such typical, mindless dribble spewing from your looser mouth.
Its almost not worth a reply to your “unix programmers” other than wtf???? You obviously dont have a clue.
Have fun in your parents basement customizing your phone with its “millions of options”….just dont forget to wake up in the morning and look for a job looser. And one last thing……If I am so locked down with my JB Iphone4, what “useful” things can you do that I can not – other than install AVG and task-killer…

When people make stupid comments like yours it provokes people to respond…there is always a sense that maybe some of you may realize how wrong you are. Somehow I always get sucked into the troll world you live in. Unfortunately you are an Apple fanatic and unable to see beyond that. JB iPhone 4…so you can install useless apps at no price…wow..lucky you. I am so jealous. Hey..how about this..i’ll let you have the last word cause you wont be able to resist….by the way..I dont need a job..I have a career…do you know what that is?

So should we install an antivirus?
    Any recommendations?

A virus is created by people that want to rebel and to be able to see the work they accomplished. The work may not be something we call positive though. Since you probably don’t have a clue why Windows ccomputers gets virus’ over Unix /Linux machines then there is no need to waste time explaining to someone that doesn’t have a clue anyways. Android has brought us way more with an open source community then Apple could ever have. When a product has been able to grow and supply the world within a few years… yes of corse there will be viruses created. It’s not a bad thing it just means its winning the game between the smart phones.

When’s the last time u have seen an Android phone running iPhone OS…. That’s what I though! We all know iPhone can run Android! With 2. 3 out its much more stable and reliable. Once 3.0 is released we can start saying goodbye to iphone and then people like Steven will wonder why they bought an overpriced price of equipment on an overpriced plan and shirt provider!

If u don’t want a virus pay attention to where your apps come from. If it looks like a shady site it probably is for a reason. We all know people that get viruses on Windows is because they have no idea what they click on and go to stupid pages. And Windows runs the market so viruses are made for that OS. Linux machines don’t get viruses bec there isn’t enough of the market to effect anyone efficiently like the Windows side. Ding ding ding… now it makes since why there is viruses being made for Android!

No matter how much time and effort you spend explaining these facts to people…you can never win….i have never net an apple fanboy/girl who could listen to reason.. Nice try though…
I couldn’t delete my comments so I edited them out..i figured its not worth it!!

Lol. Relax buddy. That is people for you. Its like if there are no criminals why do we need cops….. and as a cop you wouldn’t want your job to disappear…

Another security company promoting itself and their software, nothing more. If you’re not rooted and watch what you install, pay attention to permissions, you will be fine.

For most of us who rooted our devices, it is the same as the computer, know what you have before installing/using.

I for one am tired of these so called “relavations” by some security companies, we don’t need an AV on android at this time, just vigilance. Period. The community polices itself fairly well, if you’re here on this blog, then you likely also are on BB’s in which such malicious app behaviour is quickly disseminated.
