Samsung and T-Mobile seem to be on a roll lately. After making false promises for months of an update to Froyo, then finally releasing it only to find out that you have to use Samsung Kies mini to install the update, it turns out even Mac users still can’t update their devices without finding a Windows based PC. Now there are oodles of bugs that are plaguing the poor Vibrant owners that have managed to get updated. It has been a rough few weeks for the two companies.
A few of the bugs that are now being reported by Vibrant owners are as follows:
- Email notification notification sound disappearing on stock mail app
– Random vibrating
– MMS issues
– Apps mysteriously disappearing
– Wifi calling dropping calls randomly
What is so increasingly stressful about all these issues arising is the fact that they advised the delay in the update was for stability issues. Sounds to me like they never fixed them. Some of the issues and other questions are being addressed on the T-Mobile forums. If you are having any of the aforementioned issues or others, the forum is a good place to start. Otherwise I would, like I have in the past, recommend you give up on OEM and carrier updates and just root your phone. You will be so much happier.

Sounds to me like sensationalism to create hits on the web site… I have no problems with my upgrade…
Cant help that out of a million people doing an upgrade someone is bound to have issues…
When was the last time any of these people did a factory reset?
I bet you if they did one, most of these “issues would disappear…
I helped one of my friends update. I’m a heavy flasher and currently on Bionix V, but he wants to stay stock.
I did a factory reset and then installed it, and his email app is broken, as are MMS messages, and his apps are disappearing.
It has very little to nothing to do with ignorance, and everything to do with T-Mo and Samsung fucking up, as usual.
With all due respect, I have read some of your posts on the Tmo forums, and you are clearly pro-tmobile. There is nothing wrong with that, and while I am not in any way against Tmobile, no one should have to do a factory reset just to avoid having issues with their device, no matter what carrier or phone they are using. You say it sounds like sensationalism to create traffic for the site…I say not reporting this issue would be akin to covering up an obvious, and arguably major, flaw with the OEM/carrier’s update.
I did a factory reset before installing the update and I have no issues on my vibrant with 2.2…
I’ll never buy a Samsung phone and no one else should either. How bad do things have to get before people vote with their wallets? My HTC Droid Incredible has had Froyo since August and runs perfectly always.

I have been frustrated since getting my Vibrant a few months ago. Then, I got excited over the new that froyo was available to the Vibrant. Then, frustrated again, as I am a MAC user and not able to install Kies. I did install it under parallels running Windows 7. Still had huge issues and was not able to upgrade.
Finally, rooted, re-rom’ed and moved on. Now running Bionix-v and have no complaints
This is why rooting your Vibrant is key. Custom roms get better support from volunteer devs, while lucrative companies can’t support there own OTA software.

I Rooted mine a long time time ago, and have been on 2.2 since october. mine is working great. +1 for the developers at XDA!
Maybe they should’ve waited a little while before releasing the update……<—–sarcasm
You make it sound as if rooting your phone and flashing a custom rom means you won’t have any problems.
Have you ever read an XDA thread for a rom or sat in an android IRC channel? There’s plenty of bugs and issues that happen to SOME people no matter what the rom is.
Not to mention these custom roms are almost always based on leaked OEM roms (in the case of the SGS/Vibrant). I’m a huge supporter of TW and other devs, but you have to give Sammy some credit for these roms and for having froyo available for several months now, even if it wasn’t a publicly available update.
I guess the fact that there’s never been a 100%-reliable, completely bug-proof major software update for any phone isn’t going to stop people from hating manufacturers and carriers any chance they get. Gotta make headlines, even if there’s no news.
Id reply to spandexbandit but the android spin app doesn’t seen to work with reply…
I’ve been using tw roms since I got my vibrant months ago amd don’t understand what bugs you are having issues with….and now I have trigger and my phone is even faster…if youhave just a little technical knowledge.rooting is the way to go….it not only fixes issues but unlocks a whole new world of possibilities on your phone…but of your are happy with your phone under performing…by all means..stick with it that way…
Just don’t act like rooting has issues and midinform people…the deva at xda have named to improve leaked unofficial versions of froyo for the vibrant a long time ago…and no thanks to samsung…
If samsung wants to get it right..maybe they should talk to the devs at xda
Personally, I’ve been modding my phones long before Android was even an idea in Rubin’s mind. I’ve rooted many different Android devices and flashed hundreds of different mods. But I don’t represent the majority of phone users.
Flashing customer firmware is NOT foolproof and ALWAYS has some element of risk (hence the large-font, bold typeface disclaimers in every ROM thread on XDA). Of course most of us who are comfortable with that risk will follow directions and everything works out perfectly, or if it doesn’t we can fix it without panicking and blaming others. I’m in no way suggesting rooting a phone is bad, but conversely to your argument, don’t act like rooting and installing unofficial roms can’t cause problems or bugs.
And “no thanks to samsung” except that they developed the continually-improving base roms that the devs have had a chance to pimp out. Sammy definitely could use a lot of work with their development side, but overall they’ve made some pretty badass devices (at least the SGS line).
Flashing is not foolproof, but as you stated if you follow instructions you do not go wrong and it is always better than the alternative…i.e. waiting for manufacturers to fix their bugs…that doesnt happen.
It is no-thanks to samsung, cause Vibrant owners are still waiting for a decent 2.2 update that was not OTA and it was full of bugs..which they stated was the whole reason for the delay..B.S…they werent working on it cause they couldnt care less. Im not saying Samsung is evil…they are just no different or no better than any manufacturer out there. They do not care about the customers, just the money coming in. They know that despite their tactics right now and people stating that they wont buy smasung again, people will buy. This was just like 6 years ago when I bought the motorola Z8..I knew motorola was terrible at making decent phones back then, but the Z8 look like they got their act together…very good hardware and one of the best phones in the market at the time. Sure it was motorolas first attempt at Symbian but I gave them the benefit of the doubt…One month after using I had discovered so many bugs that this phone should have never been released till it was ready…but of course, just like Samsung now, release dates are more important than addressing issues.I waited for a whole year for an update and nothing….finally motorola released an update but it was so buggy they pulled it out a few days later…ONe developer..took that and fixed the bugs and re-released it. I had to find him and email him personally so he can send me the update cause I could not find it anywhere…just posts about him having fixed it. His update fixed all the bugs Motorla NEER fixed..years later Motorola still didnt fix it…why…because they didnt care..they didnt need to fix this bug for the customers who already bought it..they were in contract deals stuck with a piece of crap..Motorola had made their money off it…it was off to the next crappy product that would be released early befor bug fixes to meet release dates.. People will buy..thats what matters..and with the contract deals..they have no choice but to stay with it..and thats what manufactures like Samsung are relying on.
Rooting may have occasional bugs, but the android community works on them a lot more than any manufacturer ever will. Cause the community cares about the community…Manufacturers dont. Bionix fusion was working 100 times better than the stock 2.1 back when the vibrant was first out. My sister wont let me root her phone and flash it so she still is on the crappy stock samsung should have never released and is always complaining to me about slow response, wake lag issues when she is on a call, gps issues and so on (she still wont let me flash it but eventually she will cave in since Samsung will never fix it…) You think sticking with Stock and what manufacturers have to offer is a better way than rooting..when your phone frustrates you every day because manufacturers couldnt care less to fix these issues? Its not like back in the day when a phone just made calls so when you picked it up it always did what it was supposed to. With stock we have to suffer crashes, slow response, no gps, no signal, and never being able to rely on the phone. I am running trigger now and even my battery life has improved so much I get through a whole day of usage from 6 am that I leave for work till midnight that I go to bed and I still have 40% battery…do you know how long my battery lasted on stock…6 hours,,thats reliability for you…
Yeah the SGS phones are really good hardware wise, but Samsung failed to address the software issues and without the community they wouldnt be where they are. Cause if the commmunity didnt bother with rooting and custom roms…Samsung’s fame with the SGS series would go down the drain shortly after its release from all the problems. They wouldnt have solf over a million units like they did…just like the nook color gained popularity after it was rooted because you could finally do something with it..rather than just have a glorified overpriced e-reader.
Manufactures have to realise that its the community that keeps them where they are…
Like Motorola I mentioned above…this company is well known for making one bad phone after another and relies on marketing and fashion to push through their crap…like the V8..later the razor..one of the worst phones on the market back then that wouldnt stop selling even when I would warn customers..dont get it, you will be back with issues…but it was a fashion statement…so sure enough everyone would get this razor thin phone with the smart commercials and sure enough less than a month they would be back complaining. If it werent for android and the community the that company would sink..but they come up with the Droid running android and they start rising.
Never again Samsung.
I have a Fascinate. It’s rooted, but there is no fully working ROM available, and there won’t be one, because nobody has leaked a working ROM. It does make me wonder how close a Vibrant ROM would be. Can I install a semi-working AOSP, and replace the broken applications with the Vibrant ones? I don’t know yet.
This isn’t a phone. It’s a computer. We expect upgrades for our computer OSes. I would even pay for that.
By “no working ROM” I meant “no working 2.2, or higher ROM.”
