Interesting Quality Assurance…

An interesting comment that we touched on earlier, also contained the anonymous users views on hardware, quality, pricing, and functionality. Yet again I’m curious as to what other people’s views are on this subject.

General overview on different manufacturers, from low to high quality:

Motorola:  Atrix line  — Fast Processor, Nice Concept, Awful MotoBlur, Awful quality, Awful Price
Droid line — Slow/Medium Processor, Awful MotoBlur, Poor quality, Slightly Overpriced
Defy line — Slow Processor, Awful MotoBlur, Better quality, Rightly Priced.
Tablets –  Fast Processor, Nice Concept, Medium Quality, Awful Price.

Huawei:    Ideos line — Slow Processor, Functional Concept, Low quality, Low Price

LG:           All lines, Good Specs, Good Concepts, Slightly Overpriced, Random Quality
Tablets:  Great Specs, Great Concepts, Slightly Overpriced, Random Quality

LG needs to pay attention to quality, especially battery and design.

Samsung: Galaxy line — medium processor, bad touchwiz(lag), good hardware quality (except GPS)
awful OS quality, overpriced.  (Impoved with the 4G in a do over, not enough
done to merit Samsung another chance).
First Androids (Moment/Cliq) — slow Processor, awful touchwiz, good quality, over priced

Nokia:     All lines:  Excellent Hardware, Good Concepts, Poor OS (Worse with win7), Great Quality, but
Overpriced.

HTC:       All lines:  Good Specs, Good Concepts, Great HTC Sense.  Great Hardware, Properly Priced.
Hardware quality could improve slightly (no plastic, look at details like Apple).

Apple:      All lines:  Medium Specs, Good Concepts, Great UI, Excellent Hardware, Overpriced.  OS has
drawbacks, and Communist/Dictator like behavior in their business model, is
why I stay away from it.

Blackberry was not included, as they don’t have a decent smartphone that can be part of this category.  If we needed to include the Storm or other units offered by them, it would be worse than Motorola.

What are your thoughts?

I'm an avid technology lover. My first Android device was a G1; I fell in love (except for the battery), next I got a Samsung Captivate; error in judgment on my behalf, now I've moved on to the MyTouch 4G; which I absolutely love. What started with me just needing some kind of phone to use, i.e. free G1, ended with a new addiction.... I also enjoy long walks on the beach and luxurious bubble baths.... Oh wait.

That’s why I stick to HTC.

Nothing like my rooted Vibrant with Bionix, couldn’t be happier. Screen is beautiful, UI is blazing fast, and the battery can last 30 hrs. at times.

  4. Motorola: Milestone line -> high but still ok-ish price, hardware good but not durable, horrible update policy, pr-catastrophe’s, poor customer support, tends to break promises, misses releasedates etc., Software: catastrophic buggy… not obvious, but on long term very annoying

Samsung: Galaxy Tab -> Still waiting for any notice about updates, Software on the tab-side: okay-ish, but bloated, Kies: HORRIBLE, hardware good, is too silent pr-wise (customer relations, no open forums etc), was overpriced, but is now at a reasonable price (440€ off contract, 0€ on contract with unlimited data, 5000 min voice included for 35€/month and free bluetooth headset, european Version)

Completely agree with the HTC side of things. The only thing wrong with my Desire HD is the plastic case covering the sim card that snapped when I tried to take it off to switch sim cards.

    Cliq is motorola not samsung…just a fyi…

Again, this is why I stick with HTC as well.

However, the “communist” business model of Apple you speak of is the epitome of their entire ideology. They control what the people don’t care about, be it applications, modifying software, etc. One of the reasons they’ve done so well is because of their closed business model, from shielding their consumers from virtually all tweaking.

Do I agree with them? No. I like messing with things. But for the average American, who doesn’t care/doesn’t know how to tweak anything, it’s perfect. Let them have a shiny phone that seemingly does everything. It’s “magical” isn’t it?

they control what they think people won’t care about. But they eventually will care. The original Mac was also supposed to be the beginning of the post-PC era. It was amazingly simple compared to MS DOS but eventually Windows took over.

    HTC knows what they’re doing.

  9. Buck says:

Let’s home that Google picks HTC again for its next Nexus phone. Used Nexus Ones are still commanding high prices on ebay.

  10. If you want to label me a fanboy of anything, please let it be HTC. I slightly agree with the plastic but its not overdone like Samsung, they make the highest quality devices period. I would easily place them higher than Apple in quality. There is nothing to like about Samsung IMHO, and Motorola is average in almost all regards. I bought a Xoom, I love it, but I not so secretly wish it was an HTC device when those hard sharp edges are digging the big heavy device into my hands.

Apple users like the customer service because when their horribly qa’d devices break, they get them replaced without hassle. I’ve never had a problem with an HTC device needed replacement, and (un)fortunately my Evo has lasted through a few hard drops, including being thrown across the street.

My G1 is still in perfect condition, still runs perfect, battery is still good. The Nexus One is the best built, best looking and best feeling phone i’ve touched, but the Thunderbolt might take that crown. Yeah, I like Android, but I love HTC.

I have to agree that HTC seems to have the best track record. Samsung likes plastic too much and just doesn’t seem to care about devices once they’re in customer hands. Motorola seems pretty average to me but the Droid line had good marketing. Reason for avoiding Motorola is their locked/encrypted/signed boodloader.

  12. Cant beat open bootloader… Motorola would be easily on top if they would only let the devs to fix that stupid kernel and motoblur…

Idiots… Its funny but their stock is tanking ever since the release of the Dx and D2… They realy had something with the D1 and could have been the market leader… I think a lot of people are realizing this now…
