Sprint-Mobile – One Carrier to Rule Them All?

According to sources at Businessweek, Sprint has been seeking to grab a piece of T-Mobile USA. The reported negotiations haven’t been getting off to a very promising start as a value for T-Mobile can not be determined. T-Mobile has also been seeking a possible purchase of Clearwire as an alternative to the deal with Sprint. It should be noted that Deutsche Telekom, current owner of T-Mobile, CFO Timotheus Hoettges has said ”In general, all options are open in the U.S. — the sale of the whole business or of parts”. However, the carrier is currently not under any pressure to rush into any decisions, so an actual answer regarding the possible merger or other ventures is still unclear.

A few questions arise when I think about a possible merger of the nation’s number three and four.

  • How would it work with one of them being GSM and the other being CDMA?
  • What would come in the future of 4G for these carriers?
  • What would the rebrand be?
  • Would the FCC even allow this merger?
  • Would the new super-carrier be a formidable opponent for the current super powers?

It’s definitely a curious proposition. Any thoughts?

I'm an avid technology lover. My first Android device was a G1; I fell in love (except for the battery), next I got a Samsung Captivate; error in judgment on my behalf, now I've moved on to the MyTouch 4G; which I absolutely love. What started with me just needing some kind of phone to use, i.e. free G1, ended with a new addiction.... I also enjoy long walks on the beach and luxurious bubble baths.... Oh wait.

  1. Dear god no, we need more carriers and real competition not fewer!

    • Winston

Would you rather have 3 big carriers, or just 2? Sprint and T-Mobile will fade out, unable to compete with AT&T and Verizon.

      • Tshizzle87

@Winston that’s BS. If anybody’s in danger of fading, it’s ATT. They’ve been riding the Apple success wave for too long, and T-Mobile has become one of the major players with Android devices. ATT hasn’t had a signature Android device yet, and it’s doubtful that the iPhone is going to continue to keep them in their spot. T-Mobile went from nothing to something in a matter of a couple years, and the sky is still the limit considering they have the best 4G available right now. T-Mobile is hot right now and I imagine they’ll be one of the top 3 carriers sooner rather than later.

        • Winston

Last I read, T-Mobile is the only wireless provider that lost subscribers. The other three all gained.

          • Jsp254

Sprint gained me! I’m on the can right now. With t-mockery I would have one to two bars in here, and bounce from E to G. With Sprint, I’m getting the same amount of signal, but with 3G and clearer calls. Plus the Sprint signal is more reliable and stronger in areas where t-mockery can’t reach.

            And… EVO Shift + 3G + Adobe Flash = better bathroom experience!!!

          • Uncoloredpoem

            First off. Creepy.

You pretty much told us all you have Sprint because you can watch porn..

Or whatever else you do with 3g in the bathroom ;)

I have tmobile and my brother has sprint and my speeds kick the shit out of his.

  2. It’s inevitable. Look at the balance sheets of carriers, and then consider that they’re all going to be dumping billions into their networks every year for the next few years to build out 4G. THEN consider that there will be more upgrades after that.

The US wireless industry will be just fine with three major players.

  3. TheShick

As an 8 year veteran of T-Mobile and not a big fan of Sprint, I would be pretty pissed off. Sprints network sucks along with their customer service. T-Mobile on the other hand has great service/customer service. Remember what happened to Nextel? They are still around but not very big anymore. 10-12 years ago they were the hottest thing since sliced bread, then Sprint merged with them and they kind of became obselete. That is just my opinion, don’t quote me on anything!

  5. Rainbowpedobear666

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!. no no no way in hell. hell no. i refuse to acknowledge this crap. simply put NO!!! sprint can burn in hell. this better be an early april fools joke thats not funny

    I love that LOTR reference.

  7. ThaTruth

I think google should go ahead and buy out T-Mobile and call it G-Mobile. Thus pushing their plan into full affect and take over the world, the Technology World that is. LOL

  8. androidEyez

I’m with ThaTruth if Google bought out T-mobile then things would become very interesting indeed all major flagship devices would flock to T-Mobile that would be like heaven! I am currently with Tmobile and I’m a little scared of what Sprint would do to all current customers so please Google step in and save the DAY!!!!

T-Mobile UK and Orange UK merged and seems to be doing ok for them. Orange users can use T-Mobile’s reception through the UK. They have also opened Shops under the branding, Everything Everywhere. Helps that we only have GSM in the UK so doesn’t cause any problems.

Let the merger go. T mobile wants too much, let them buy clear, and Sprint just go lte 4g data instead of wimax. tmobile has great customer supprt, but there network where I live is pretty poor. I would love to use them, just to many dropped calls.

    As for branding. Sprint-mobile. :)
