[Question] How’s your battery life?

47

Battery life is easily one of the biggest deal breakers when it comes to choosing a new device or even a custom ROM for the device you already have. We all depend on our phones to go the distance without having to worry about unexpected intermissions.

That being said beyond the fixes and enhancements that Google themselves have applied to current Android OS releases, developers have enlisted some of their own. Most of these come in the form of kernel enhancements from governors to under-volting, and sometimes even under-clocking of a devices processor. Of course this is not to say there aren’t many more tweaks, just stating the obvious ones.

Which brings me to my question:

  • How’s your battery life?

Normally I would phrase a general question in a format that could be used in a poll, however I feel this one may be better served by letting you fill in the answers rather than giving you multiple choice. I feel that any answers will be helpful to other people both advanced and novice as one of the biggest questions with any device or ROM is battery life. So let us know your experience. All I ask is:

  • You state what device you’re using and whether or not your device is stock
  • If your device is not stock let us know what ROM or other modifications you’re using

Example:

Easily 24 hours of battery life, with moderate use I usually end up around 50% after a typical day.

HTC EVO 4G

MIUI 1.5.13 (Tiamat_Evo-v4.0.2-sbc Kernel)

I'm an avid technology lover. My first Android device was a G1; I fell in love (except for the battery), next I got a Samsung Captivate; error in judgment on my behalf, now I've moved on to the MyTouch 4G; which I absolutely love. What started with me just needing some kind of phone to use, i.e. free G1, ended with a new addiction.... I also enjoy long walks on the beach and luxurious bubble baths.... Oh wait.

I currently get TERRIBLE battery life. If I use my phone in a heavy manner, it’ll be on it’s death bed by 4-5 pm and I take it off at 6:15am. I used to be rooted and had better battery life but I’ve had issues lately that made me wanna go back to stock. Now I remember why I rooted in the first place :

    Samsung Vibrant (3G)
    Stock

Bro…..root……flash bionix 1.3.1 or nextgen on, bali or overstock kernel, calibrate your battery correctly and you will be impressed.  I’m currently running lastest cm7 nightly and still get decent battery life around 16 hours moderate to heavy use, but does not last as long as bionix did.

I use a MyTouch 4g running Cganogenmod 7. I also use SetCpu with serveral profiles and routinely get 24hrs from my device. I am a true poweruser and my phone is rarely off. The screen off set to underclock at 245 powersave is a huge battery boost.

    • Phazz says:

My buddy I work with also used CM7 on his MyTouch 4g and has amazing battery life. I’m heavily considering CM7 for my Vibrant as I believe that’s half of the reason for his great battery life.

  3. I have pretty bad battery life, whether I was rooted or stock.

    OG Droid
    Power Elite Gingerbread

I take it off around 5:30am and if I use it moderately or more it needs charging around 6pm.  By moderately I mean checking email occasionally and replying to a bunch of text messages (maybe throw in 10 minutes of gaming while I take a “break”).  I am currently deciding what phone to upgrade to because this is a little ridiculous.

HTC desire HD battery life sucks, less than 24 hour even with lite use, and if you plan to do little heavy works it drains old sands timer.. :(

On a normal day I get about 14-16hrs of use out of my phone. On days when I use it very little, it usually goes past 17hrs-20hrs. With moderate use, I can get it to about 14-16hrs. With heavy use, I generally have to look for a charger by 7-8pm, so 12hrs. Since I usually sleep 6-8 hrs, this means I get good battery life, and the phone has 8 hrs to recharge for the next day.

T-Mobile G2 with CM7. I get mediocre battery life even with Juice Defender and SetCPU and lite use. I also have ridiculous battery drain at work. It will go from 100% to off in about 5 hours with no interaction by me. Not sure what the deal is there, but I am going back to stock to see if that clears up the issue.

  10. At least 10-12 hours or more on rooted HTC Droid Incredible with 1800 mAmp OEM battery, running Magnolia 1.4 Beta ROM and Chad’s Incredikernel.  For complete freedom from a charger for long trips away from an AC outlet, I’ll use my 2150 mAmp or 2600 mAmp batteries, which offer >24 hours.   Typical use; turn off background sync when I want to stretch.

  11. Cruzantis says:

Root or unroot mytouch 4g is one of the greatest fails on smartphones, and to anyone that has a phone stock that doesn’t last a day laying on the table doing nothing like the mytouch 4g does, you sir have a piece of crap of smartphone as I do. Forget rooting I bought a $235 bucks electronic device that should WORK properly, i hate rooting specially roms which always have some issues. I’ve been rooted on previous devices and ill never root again, waste of time. (PERSONAL OPINION) the only thing that might be useful from rooting is roms, which are not useful to me right now in any way, since mytouch 4g people have to struggle with settings and mods to make that battery last which in my opinion is a waste of time unless you sit on your pc all day doing nothing. anything but roms the mytouch 4g can do without rooting, and if by chance someone mentions overclocking plz dont do it, the phone runs optimal without overheating at the stock speed.

  12.  Epic 4G w/ Eco5oce’s beta battery saver rom, and I shit you not, I get roughly 36 hours with heavy use

  13. I have an Moto Atrix, non-rooted, it’s has a stock 1930 mAh battery that with light use can last me well over 24 hrs, but since I usually use it quite a bit (browsing, facebook, twitter, pandora for an hour or two, some navigation gps) it still lasts me most of the day (16-18 hrs) that I’m awake, at night it has a power saving feature that turns off the radio and only turns it on every 15 mins to ping for messages. I let the phone control the brightness of the screen automatically. GPS is off unless I need it. Other than that no other changes, I’m fairly happy with this phone in that regard (compared to my previous phone, the Captivate, which would discharge in less than 10 hrs easily with light use.

I have an HD2 running hyperdroid CM7. I have wifi on constantly, goweather live wallpaper and with moderate/heavy usage it will last me 24 hours. I imagine it would last days if I was just using it for a few calls and texts.

@raymond house: I too suffer much increased battery drain when at work. I’m surrounded by computers and other electrical devices and put it down to interference caused by these. Not sure if theres any truth in that…

Ultra Moderate use, about 15 mins talking , 30-40 texts, half-hour wi-fi, No 3g, no gaming..lasts about 3 full days, not too bad for a smart phone i suppose

  18. James says:

I get fantastic battery life compared to when the phone was new/stock. I easily get 24h+ with moderate usage. Off the charger at 8am, home at 8pm always with 50%+ and that includes on average 60 texts, 45 min talk time, 45 min to 1 hour web browsing (wifi). With light usage I can usually push it to 72 hours between charges. Purchased on day one, out of the box, it never lasted longer than 8-12 hours.

I do not use SetCPU profiles, don’t log in to any IM services, and do not have Facebook or Twitter synced.

Texting, calls, and the occasional Google Maps navigation bring my life down to 6. Only complaint with this fantastic device. I.can reduce some tasks but I have it set the way I like and luckily always have a power source readily available.

GPS is on no wifi. Using UMARO Kernel.

  26. Thermionics says:

    Phone: Thunderbolt – rooted
ROM: Das BAMF 1.6 with included kernel and recommended radio (also tried Gingersense and it was worse)
Battery: Seidio slim extended (made no perceivable difference from stock battery)
CPU settings from Das BAMF toolkit 422-960mhz
Brightness is set VERY – IRRITATINGLY dim as 82% battery usage reported by phone
    Wifi on all day
No LTE coverage in my area
    Calls about 40 minutes/day
    GPS turned off
Bluetooth on all day for headset use

I’m coming from about a year with a Droid X and I am getting about 50% of the battery life with the ‘Bolt as I was with it under identical conditions. The Das BAMF ROM is definitely helpful.  With the stock ROM I was getting about 9-12 hours, now can make it to the end of a 14-hour day.

Battery life is the Achilles heal of this device. Too bad, because it is otherwise very nice with HTC Sense and HTC widgets.

    G2x – Stock Android 2.2.2

On a normal day, I get about 13-15 hours use, which consists of my wifi being on all the time, checking email, twitter, etc. for about 1-2 hours throughout the day and playing a game for about 30 mins-1 hour throughout the day and taking various calls for about 10 mins throughout the day. Overall, it isn’t as good as my last phone, the G2. My G2, I got about 20 hours use. The usage was about the same as my G2x now, except my email and social media apps ran more frequently as I had them set to push every 1-2 hours. My G2x, I had to set my email to manual push and social media apps push every 4 hours. Without that, my G2x battery only lasted about 10-12 hours. It isn’t a bad trade off, but like everyone, I’d like my push notifications more frequently without a big drain on the phone. One can only hope.

Moderate use – email, checking/reading articles and blogs, a hour of surfing on 4G, wifi is only on at home, gps is off. I get probably 9 hours. This might be average but no matter how you look at it, the battery life is terrible. God forbid, what if I actually need to use my smartphone as a phone? Then I’d probably estimate about 7 hours. Horrible!
