New CM7 Nightly Grants Ability to Deny Specific Permissions to Applications

With the many applications available for our devices one of the biggest complaints are the permissions requested upon installation. After the many trojan scares we’ve had it’s easy to see why people are so cautious when adding new software. I’ll admit certain permission requests have kept me from downloading certain applications. You’d figure someone would come up with a way to keep stuff like this from happening. Maybe incorporate it in a popular ROM that vast majority of the Android Community use…. Oh wait they have.

If you’re a CyanogenMod fan and keep[ track fo the nightly builds you may have already noticed this new feature. This allows users to set which permissions they want applications to have access to by allowing easy navigation via a tweak to the settings menu. Denying permissions is easily reversible and will allow users peace of mind when browsing the Android Market and installing a variety of apps. A simple how-to can be found below.

To use it:

  • CyanogenMod settings / Permissions / Enable management
  • Applications / Manage applications / tap on permissions to revoke

Revoked permission are marked by a strikethrough.

Revoking and reenabling permissions is applied instantly. Though, at least reenabling “Network communication” requires a reboot (revoking still works instantaneously).

If you’d like to grab the latest nightly be sure to shoot over to the Team Douche Mirror Network and download the appropriate file for your phone.

About the Author

Jacob Cunningham
I'm an avid technology lover. My first Android device was a G1; I fell in love (except for the battery), next I got a Samsung Captivate; error in judgment on my behalf, now I've moved on to the MyTouch 4G; which I absolutely love. What started with me just needing some kind of phone to use, i.e. free G1, ended with a new addiction.... I also enjoy long walks on the beach and luxurious bubble baths.... Oh wait.

I’m noticing more and more lately that consumers are having to provide for consumers.  A worrying trend.

Very well said. The only reason I continue to support and defend the platform, is frankly, the community. Blogs like this, XDA, Cyanogen and the rest of the devs, that I swear never sleep. Hardware manufacturers (i am talking to you HTC), carriers, hell even the stores that sell devices are only trying to milk us and force us into things we don’t like or want. If the community did not support Android as voraciously as they do I would still have a pre paid phone. It is not worth the hassle to deal with these companies that assume that we will buy no matter what like sheep (read I-Phone users). I know this topic deals with private developers using stolen apps to infect us, but I never worry about this because I use Cyanogen, and keep my phone up to date. Something my carrier is not good at doing for me.

Yes I agree. Also Cyanogen dose not receive the credit he should. I know he has a lot of team work help but we all should support Cyanogen and said team members as best we can. They go above and beyond for the the community.
