App Inventor for Android by Jason Tyler – The Book + A Give-A-Way

20

Not to long ago, Google stepped in and introduced App Inventor. It was designed to help even the most basic user create their very own application and install it directly to their Android device.  As soon as the new web based builder was launched, Google was flooded with requests to use it. I know it took them almost a month to finally get to my request, so I know there was a lot of interest. As with any new program there is somewhat of a learning curve. Many people were still unsure of how to use the new tool. Some of the leading developers and trainers weren’t even sure what to do with it.

That all recently changed when a few amazing people published a few books on how to actually use App Inventor. One of the more recent publications was by Jason Tyler. His book is titled, “App Inventor for Android: Build Your Own Apps – No Experience Required” Pretty straight forward and not hard to forget.

Jason takes you on a tour of App Inventor over a total of 426 pages with photos and easy to understand language. You start out with the basics, like setting everything up and learning some basic terminology. As you progress in building your first application you can’t help but start to understand how Android works. By the time you are finished with the book you will have walked through building 8 applications in App Inventor. You should easily be able to manipulate those 8 apps into your own look and feel versions and be well on your way to building your own unique apps.

As an added bonus, Jason wasn’t able to get everything he wanted into the book. The missing chapter is available to those that purchase the book and gives you a deeper look into some interesting abilities.

How can you win a free copy of the book??

Well, I thought long and hard about how to give this book away to a lucky reader. The typical contest would be something along the lines of what would you build… Too easy though, and too boring. Besides, I’d hate to see your idea get made before you had a chance to make it.

So, in an effort to make things a little different and a little more interesting, Bryce Walters and I came up with something from far left field. Something non Android related. Something more interesting to answer. Here are the rules -

  • Contest starts June 2nd and will run until June 9th – 1 Week
  • Any submissions after midnight CST on June 9th will be disqualified.
  • Tweet if possible, but not required.
  • Answer the following question in the comments below.
  • You may only post once, so make it good.

The question is - If you had the chance to redo one thing in your life, what would it be, and what would you do differently?

Good luck to everyone that wants a chance to win a copy of this awesome book.

Once this contest is all said and done someone will be walking away with a great chance to learn and build their dreams. If you are impatient, like myself, we have also been given a special discount coupon for the purchase of the e-book version. You can click on the “buy now” link and enter the code ANDRD at check out to get an amazing 40% off. This offer is only good until June 18th though, better get a move on if you want to save some green backs.

Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.

I would have joined the Navy after college. I almost did but decided not to literally at the last moment. It was a well founded decision, but in retrospect I would have been a better person if I had made the harder choice and signed up.

I would be a much better person today even though it probably means giving up a lot of fortunate aspects of my life.

I would have started a website like AndroidSpin.com before you did and been as famous as you all are now!

What I would do different? As a java developer already I would have looked into getting into the android development a lot earlier.  And not eat pizza every day in my early 20′s.

Opening myself up for a firing squad to unleash but you want real stuff, here we go. If i could have a redo card, I would NEVER have found myself in an affair when I have an amazing wife in the first place. Finding comfort where you shouldn’t is Hell in the long run. Now I’m trying to get out of that relationship when she lives 1000′ away. Trying to rebuild my relationship with my family. Don’t be stupid. What would I do different, realize marriage is not just 50/50 but 100/100. Enough said.

  6. If I could change one thing, I wouldn’t. I’ve had bad days and things I have regretted forever. But I have been very blessed also and am perfectly happy were I am right now.

If I could do it over again, I’d be OK with who I was a heck of a lot earlier in life.

This probably sounds a little Hallmark, but if I could go back I would take my Mother less for granted. It wasn’t until she lost her battle with cancer that I realized how much she did for me and the sacrifices she made to make sure I had everything I needed to succeed in my life. I love you and miss you, Mom!

It’s honestly a little too personal to write online personally, so I’ll just say that and if I’m selected – I’ll email you directly if need be.

Having lost almost all of my retirement with bad real estate investments 4 years ago, I have realized that there is more to life than money and “things.” When we get arrogant and feel we are above everything but our selfish desires, we will often suffer in the end.

I have taken each loss of my real estate mini-empire with a calmness, realizing I did it to myself and knowing that somehow I will survive with my wife of 4 years, my health (so far) and my religious faith (LDS) which guides me toward the spiritual rather than the physical.

If I could go back, I think I would change only one thing. I, like another poster, had an affair on my wife. The sad thing was, it was with the ex that I had an affair on with my wife. Stupid circle, I know. If I could, I would go back and ignore the thoughts of her and completely remove her from my life much earlier on. It really is Hell trying to repair a relationship after you have damaged it like that.

  14. Hmmm… what I would do different… Well, I guess that buying a Hero instead of a Desire was my most stupid decision ever…

I would have studied and learned App Inventor earlier. Maybe this book could’ve be written by me…
