As a hardware reviewer I am always looking for tools that can give me extra knowledge of the hardware that I am reviewing. A number of months ago I stumbled across Elixir. I always install these apps, in this order, immediately after setting up the device.
- Astro File Manager
- Wifi File Explorer
- Elixir
- Quadrant Advanced
- Speedtest
Why I choose these should be fairly obvious:
- Astro – file managers were not “standard” until only recently
- WiFi File Explorer – the easiest way to browse files via the computer
- Elixir – Complete system information available without needing to rely on lacking documentation
- Quadrant – “Standard” benchmark
- Speedtest – Only recently did I add this (When 4G became anything and everything under the sun)
The amount of information available in Elixir is more than even the biggest geeks. The different options available are:
Device, Software, Sensors, Applications, Shortcut widgets, Statusbar widgets, homescreen widgets, report, Logcat logs, and finally, Dmesg log
Device: 17 sections: Battery, Internal Storage, External Storage, Processor, Memory, Telephony, WiFi, Bluetooth, Location, Display, Airplane mode, Synchronization, Audio, Camera, Front Camera, Camcorder, and Input devices

Software: 9 sections: Build, Operating system, Settings, Configuration, Clipboard, Environmental variables, Features, Java system properties, Shared libraries

Applications: 3 sections: Processes/Services, Tasks, Top (top linux command – which shows CPU and memory usage of processes)

Shortcut widgets: Ability to create multiple widgets which can be accessed via shortcuts
(no image)
Statusbar widgets: A widget that can be placed in your pull down notification bar

Homescreen widgets: Typical homescreen widget
(This is an extreme example)
Report: Generate a report detailing your device and all installed applications

Logcat log: A log file of any Logcat output

Dmesg log: Dmesg (“display message” or “driver message”) enabling you to print or send the message buffer of the kernel
