Arkon TAB-RSHM Universal Tablet Headrest Mount. Travel in Style!

3

You must have all heard of Arkon as they are one of the first universal mounting solution companies in existence.  They went over a trio of Tablet mounting systems for cars and I’ve had a chance to play around a little and here are my results for the first product in the series, the Universal Tablet Headrest Mount.

If you have kids like I do then you’ve probably had to fiddle around with portable DVD players when you go on trips.  There are lots of options available, but they generally end up with a series of straps to interweave through your headrest mounts and different angles to try and secure so that the kids can watch a movie in safety without a protable DVD player falling down on their laps.

Now we all have Tablets or are thinking of purchasing Tablets and why not use this awesome new technology to entertain the kids on long trips.  All you need is some form of mounting system to hold it in place.

Arkon have a number of options available for different devices ranging from Android tablets to iPads and more.

This review covers the Arkon TAB-RSHM Universal Tablet Headrest Mount.

Installation is incredibly simple and took only a couple of minutes.

Attach the mounting bar to the rear of the headrest.  A couple of hooks wrap around the stem of your headrest and then a couple of thumbscrews pull the hooks tight from the opposite side.  The side of the mount facing the headrest has indents along it’s length to allow adjustment for almost any headrest size.

Don’t forget to securely tighten the thumbscrews on the front of the mount.  Even though the mount could not fall off the headrest, tightening it securely prevents it from slipping down your headrest mounting bars from your desired position.

Attach the Universal Tablet mounting system to the front of the headrest mounting bracket.  The mounting system uses the standard double tab sliding mount Arkon use on almost all of their mounts.  This also means that you can purchase additional mounting systems for any future devices you may need to mount.

Insert your Tablet into the Universal Tablet Mount using the spring loaded top and bottom grips.  The spring is sufficient to hold your Tablet very securely in place and the cushioned pads grip the top and bottom of the Tablet.

In conclusion, I found the system incredibly easy to install.  Much easier than portable DVD mounting system I used previously with my kids.

MSRP is $39.95 as listed on the Arkon site, but you can normally pick these mounts up for less with a quick search in the Internet. For more information, head over to the Arkon website.

Where are the crash tests ?  Don’t want my iPad on my son’s face if we crash.

Odd how there’s no reply to an extremely valid question about crash tests. The review (if responsible) should have provided information on that even if it meant stating that no crash test information was available.

I just tried calling Arkon directly and no one answers the phone. I tried customer service, sales and hitting “0″ It all goes to the same person’s vmail. Probably the most pertinent information to anyone installing a headrest mount is knowledge that the device was crash tested otherwise you must assume the person sitting in front of it will die in a bad car crash. Assuming anything else is irresponsible.

Hmm, never thought about crash tests before. That brings up an interesting point and even a more ‘common sense” issue in my book. mounting any digital electronic device to a head rest has the inherent possibility for dismemberment or even death in the event of a crash. Be it a mount for a tablet, a pre-installed screen in the headrest itself, or a portable DVD player in zipper case. I still think the ceiling mounted players are the safest and best option. I personally just let my daughter hold my tablet or netbook to watch movies on road trips. At least if we wreck the device is more likely to end up hitting the floor and not her face. I put more responsibility on the parents than on the company providing a product. It is like telling your teenage daughter to not text and drive while you are texting and driving with her in the car. People need to start thinking more is all.
