Ice Cream Sandwich headed to ALL 2011 Sony Xperia devices, so they Say

When the official Ice Cream Sandwich OS was announced and demonstrated one question remained unanswered. What devices that are currently out will get an update? That question will be one that I fear will be left unanswered for a very long time. We have all seen the broken promises that carriers and manufacturers have placed on devices. Ultimately leading you to either root you device and put a custom ROM on to get what you want, or forced you into spending money on a ‘NEW’ device that had it. That happened a lot with Samsung and Gingerbread, heck it is still happening.

With every new OS we here promises and sometimes even get time lines that never work out. We can only hope that when we are told a device or a series of devices will receive the an OS that it happens. Sony Ericsson is first to jump on the bandwagon that is ICS. They aren’t the only manufacturer, but they sure are setting high hopes right out of the gates. They aren’t announcing that they will update just the Xperia Play or the Xperia Arc. They are saying they plan to update the entire Xperia smartphone portfolio!

“Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.”

Until SE actually gets their hands on ICS, they can only ‘plan’ to do it. Once they get what is needed to start building the updates is when they will know if all their devices can support it or not. Still, I like to hear a manufacturer step up to the plate and at least let their customers know they will try their best.

The next question will be carrier based. Even if SE can get updates made for all of their 2011 devices, will AT&T allow one to get through to their Xperia Play? Or will they be more focused on a new device and moving you to a new contract to enjoy they cold deliciousness of ICS? Only time will tell.
