Remember back in October when we told you Grand Theft Auto III was coming for Android? Well, I hope you didn’t think we were kidding. The super-mega-smash-hit video game from Rockstar Games will be gracing the Android Market next Thursday, December 15th, and it will cost $4.99 — a far cry from the $60 we’re used to shelling out for a game of this quality.

While, the game will be a direct tribute to the original PS2 version that launched 10 years ago, it won’t be an exact carbon copy and will offer players a refreshed gameplay experience packed with newly created textures, more complex characters with higher polygon count, and higher resolution assets from the game’s PC release.

Unfortunately, GTA III isn’t going to be available for every device, at least at first. We saw Shadowgun get released in a typical fashion, but then open support for a handful of devices by lifting the Tegra 2 requirement shortly after its release.

At $4.99, Grand Theft Auto III is gonna sell like hot cakes, and Rockstar is well aware. That being said, I’d be shocked if more devices aren’t added to that list within a month after the game’s release. There’s also whispering that the game will feature official gamepad support, so you’ll even be able to play with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 controller, if you feel so inclined.

Unless I can manage to get my hands on a copy before next Thursday (hint hint, Stormy), expect a quick look at the game on its release date. I’ll be stalking the Market and buying it the second it’s available. Stay tuned!
