Twitter account suspended

This may not be directly Android-related, but as an Ice Cream Sandwich-toting myTouch 4G owner who uses Twitter, this is still news that needs to be shared with our community. Apparently, more than a few users have had their accounts suspended and taken offline for tweeting about controversial topics like Occupy Wall Street and the NDAA, according to a report from BusinessInsider.

Reporter David Seaman, otherwise known as @d_seaman in the Twitter Universe, woke up this morning to the unfortunate news that his account had been suspended due to his “annoying tweets”.

My tweets were ‘annoying our users,’ according to Twitter’s suspension notice.

Well, not so much: nearly everyone following me appreciated my coverage of this issue, when few others in the media have had an interest in the NDAA or the widespread Occupy turnouts all over the country last night.

The story gets thicker, when reports started flowing in from Twitter users that David was not the only person to have their account banned for the same issue.

Also: it’s worth questioning why #NDAA and #OWS, which are receiving consistently VERY high volumes of conversation/tweet traffic are not trending at all on Twitter, yet their featured ‘worldwide trends’ this morning include: Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, #myfavoritefood, and Kindergarten Cop.

If there’s any truth to this, things are really starting to look troublesome for the future of our society. The Internet as we know it could be changed forever, and it won’t be in a good way. Details on this are still scarce, but I’ll be keeping an eye on this story for any developments and will update you as soon as I hear anything else.

Has your Twitter account been suspended recently with this same set of circumstances? We want to hear about it. Let us know what happened, and what Twitter’s response was to you.

There are numerous articles out there explaining how twitter trends work.
Often times engineers from twitter chime in and explain a little more.
Please read those articles and generally read up on twitter trends before complaining about them.

Short version: high volume doesn’t automatically equate to trending topic. To spell it out a little clearer: the assumption “high volume=trend” is wrong.
