If you own a Motorola DROID X, get ready for the best news you’ve gotten in a long time. Thanks to firstEncounter, a member of the RootzWiki community, there is now an alpha port of CyanogenMod 9 (Ice Cream Sandwich and all its glory) available for you to download and flash. This kanged port contains a base version of Android 4.0.1.
While, there are still a handful of bugs that need to be worked out before this can be classified as a “daily driver”, this is awesome news for owners of the device with a bootloader that remains locked by Motorola and Verizon. Here’s a look at the ins-and-outs:
What works:
- Radio (including 3G, calls, SMS)
- Bluetooth
- GPS
- 2D (hardware accelerated!) & 3D (kinda buggy)
- Wifi (if it doesn’t work, reboot)
- Sensors (including rotation/accelerometer)
- Audio (DSP force closes rarely, but still works)
- SD Card
- All hardware buttons
- Charging
- USB
- It’s fast!
What doesn’t:
- Camera
- Voice Input (excluding calls)
- MMS
- Speakerphone (sounds + music still work through speaker)
- Possibly more.
If you’d like to give this a spin, remember to make a backup first, before heading over to the EncounterICS X ROM thread for the full set of instructions and flashable zip file you’ll need to complete your ICS experience. Take that, Big Red & Moto!
