Beginning January 25th there will be two promo offers available to those of you that know what is going on. There will now be an Unlimited-Premium 5GB and an Unlimited-Ultra 10GB bundle available. Each will provide you with a few extra perks too. If you add either feature to your account you will also gain Mobile Hotspots and MobileLife Album Plus. Which they are positioning as a $19.98 per month value for FREE. The offers will be available for new and existing customers and appears to be a general offer and not a retention, or saves, special offer to keep you happy.
My personal favorite tid bit of info that is provided lies in the second bullet point under details…
- To protect T-Mobile revenue, do not proactively offer the bundle to customers already on a 5GB data feature who do not want additional data.
Is that a classic corporate move. Rather you, the customer, are supposed to know the promo exists and specifically request it on your own accord. On the bright side, you have guys like us and TmoNews to keep you in the look of these secret promos. Not to mention, if you are already rocking the 5GB plan, you may as well have tethering legally attached to your account so they can’t complain about it to you later.

What’s the difference between the current 5GB plan and “Unlimited Premium” 5GB? Aren’t they still going to throttle the speeds after you hit the limit?
Ya, they will still throttle you. The difference is in the “Extras”. Now you get Mobile Hotspots included and MobileLife Album Plus. So, from what I can tell, they won’t hassle you for tethering your phone if you aren’t paying the current $14.95 a month add on feature.
In regards to your comment about protecting revenue, it’s either they do that or they charge more initially and let everyone know.
What would you rather have?
I understand the reasons behind it. As an ex employee those statements have always made me laugh and worry at the same time. As a customer it makes me worry a little too. Like how many other deals does t-mobile and other carriers never tell us about or how much trouble is t-mobile in. Later year they activate 1million customers but they also lost 1 million customers. Subsidized phones take time to recoup, nearly 11 months. They lost a lot of money last year. I fear T-Mobile is in serious trouble in the future if things do t change for them soon.
I still have a Vibrant and the corresponding data plan at the time it came out (T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web). As far as I know, since this is a grandfathered unlimited data plan I’m not supposed to be throttled if I ever hit 5GB (correct me if I’m wrong.)
What I’m curious about is whether I’d be forced to switch from my current data plan if I ever choose to upgrade phones. If that’s the case and I would be forced to change data plans, I may want to jump on this offer when it becomes available.
Thanks!
Most likely they will tell you that you have to change the plan. You can sometimes make them let you keep it. It is tricky.
