CyanogenMOD app store currently under discussion, would you use It

It should be no surprise that we are huge fans of custom ROM’s. Most all readers of this site are. No matter how long you have been a dedicated Android user or flasher, CyanogenMOD is a staple in our community. Regardless if you use it, have used it or have at least seen the name tossed around extensively, you know what CyanogenMOD is.

One of the minds behind CM is Koushik Dutta, better know as Koush. He has brought us the recovery system known as Clockwork Mod and a whole host of other useful applications that we all use often. He has been talking with Steve Kondik about bringing a CyanogenMOD app store to the public. After all, CM is reporting nearly 1 million unique, active, user installs. The CM app store would serve a couple of purposes. It wouldn’t be limited to just CM ROM’s. Instead it would be available for any ROM developer to include in their builds. The overall idea would be giving current and would be developers another avenue to share and sell their applications. Nothing illegal of course. Many developers out there have perfectly legal apps that have been pulled from the market for one bogus reason or another. The CM app store would give creators of root only apps and various other applications a place to go, be updated and sold. Part of the profits would go to the CyanogenMOD team and the rest would go to the developer of the app. Giving everyone a win/win solution.

I assume that the CM team would take the time to look through submitted applications and make sure they are both legal and not full of malicious software. According to Koush some of the apps that they would quite easily allow in are: “Apps removed from the Market includes, one click root apps, emulators, tether apps, Visual Voicemail apps, and more. These are all completely legal (Nintendo emulators are fine, ROMs are NOT, there is a distinction).”

So far all the responses on the current topic on Koush’s Google Plus post has all been positive and supportive of the CM app store idea. They even a work-in-progress version of the app submission page already up and running. With so many apps getting pulled from the market, and many file sharing sites getting shut down and moved, what do you guys think of the idea? If there was a preinstalled or easy to locate CyanogenMOD app store, would you use it? Would it be your first stop for free apps and purchased apps to support the developing community, or would you steer clear and focus all your money and downloads solely through the Android Market?

hell yea id use it, youd be able to get some really good apps in there for tools and shit.

  2. I would give it a try. As much as I like the Amazon App Store, I do not see it as the best alternative markets can offer.

    Hell yes!!!!!

  4. This would be very welcome, I hope it will include all those US only .apk’s as well.

    “FleaMarket”?

I guess I would give it a try, but they should keep in mind that it could be filled with unhonest apps..

    • I don’t think so. The developers would be submitting their applications. From what it looks like, the cyanogenmod team would review the app before it was published to their app store. Some may fall through the cracks, but I am willing to bet we see good honest apps that we all love and want back.
