Video: First look at ICS OTA update for the Asus eee Pad Transformer TF101

Today is the day many of us in the Android community have waited for. As I’m sure most of you already know by now, the OG Asus Transformer was at the center of a massive online discussion yesterday, after a tweet was sent out by @Asus announcing that Ice Cream Sandwich was already available in Taiwan and should hit the US the next day. Well, today is that day, and as Stormy posted earlier this morning, the update hath arrived!

By now, you’ve probably already downloaded your OTA and you’re excitedly playing with your awesome new operating system. However, there’s always the chance that the update hasn’t hit your device yet, as this is a nationwide rollout, so it could take a few hours. You might also be at work, dying for the opportunity to punch out and run home to do the Android update dance, or you might not even own a Transformer and were waiting for ICS to arrive before making the decision to drop the $400 it takes to pick up a 16GB model from Best Buy like I did about a week ago. Whatever the case, I’ve decided to put together a first look video of Ice Cream Sandwich in action. Have a look at the video I shot below:

I’m thoroughly impressed with both the update and with Asus’ dedication to providing speedy updates to its devices. I bought my Transformer after doing many hours of research online to determine which tablet was right for me. Nearly everything I read about this device was positive, and customers were head-over-heels with the timely OS updates pushed out by the Taiwanese tablet manufacturer, so I decided to take the plunge based on my faith that ICS would soon hit the Transformer — looks like I made the right choice.

My only complaint, so far, is that there doesn’t seem to be a Face Unlock feature. This was one of Google’s highlights back when Android 4.0 was first announced, and either I’m blind or it’s not there — either of which is possible. Otherwise, I am ecstatic with what Asus and Google have done with the latest update. I’m really looking forward to the future of Android, and I hope my Transformer will remain compatible for another few generations.

Have you already flashed the update? Anything your liking (or disliking) in particular? Send me a shout in the comment thread — it’s nice to meet some folks from a new device community!

Android addict would be the two words I would use to describe myself. It’s the first thing I check in the morning, and the last thing I check before bed. I’m 30 years old, my first Android phone was the G1, shortly after its launch. I have also owned a myTouch 3G, and I have a myTouch 4G, which I am absolutely in love with. Other than Android, I’m a father, brother, college student, and almost-full-time employee at a local brewery/restaurant here in the cornfields of Iowa. If there’s anything you’d like to know, please feel free to hit me up. I’m a pretty nice guy, and I respond as quickly as I can. Thanks for stopping by!

Whoever made the video seems like he knows nothing of the tf101, or honeycomb whatsoever, he missed a lot of new stuff that are important

Byron, you’re absolutely right. I made the video myself. I’ve used Android since the G1 was first released, so I’m no rookie to the scene; however, I’ve only owned the TF101 for about a week (most of which was spent using the Revolver ROM). Prior to that, the only tablet I ever owned was the Viewsonic G Tablet, which never had a stable enough release for me to use Honeycomb, so yes — you hit the nail on the head. I’m sorry if I missed anything, but that’s why I titled the video “Quick Look” to cover up for my misses.

      Thanks for watching though!
