“By next year, we will not be here talking about Google+ Games, Chrome Web Store games, Games for Native Client and Android games,” he said. “We will be talking about Google games.”
Looking to the future and ultimately expanding on the recently release Google Play brand no doubt. The statement is pretty clear to us. They plan to unify all the various locations you have to go to play various games into one single location. Most likely offering a single download or purchase that will be available across every aspect of your Google login with out the need for separate purchases, installs or further developer work. For instance, you would install Angry Birds on your Android device, pop into you Chrome browser and have the game ready to play, shift over to Google Plus and kick it in a hangout and play and so on.
Yes, I said Hangouts, or rather Soni did. I have yet to play a single game on G+, that is just a personal choice. I know there are a number of games available that let you play other friends in your circles. According to Soni, Google will be bringing cutting-edge technologies into the gaming platform and incorporating Hangouts with them as well.
“It was very clear games was one of the first things we would put up there on Google+,” Soni said. “Games bring people together. They are an important part of how users interact online. Game developers push boundaries, and games are fun.”
Over time Google will execute on its mission of One Google. Bringing with it a unified approach to everything we already know and love plus a lot more.
If Google pulls it off slowly, and doesn’t try to jump the gun, I think it has a lot of potential. Imagine finding a great game like SHADOWGUN in the Play Store, purchasing it and being able to play it in Chrome, shoot up your G+ friends and then lay in bed and play it on your tablet from one single purchase. The whole Google Play store is starting to make a little more sense now isn’t it? Should be a very interesting next year or so as I have a feeling we will start seeing ‘Play’ integrated into many other areas slowly.
