Customers that have just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon, have been quite furious about the carrier’s decision to lock the bootloader. Because that’s fair right?! Well, now the carrier is being scolded for its decision, relieving its customers of ”non-open-source” pain.
Kellex at Droid-Life, has recently contacted the carrier, as well as Samsung, to see if the CDMA Galaxy S III would have an unlocked bootloader at a later date. And luckily, both representatives spilled the beans!
It is hard to say, but the Verizon Galaxy S III will later be unlocked in two possible ways. One, the Samsung representative stated that there would be some kind of “unlock tool” for the device, presumably a “one-click” type of deal. The second method, by the Verizon chat assistant, was that there would be an OTA, that would unlock the device.
I guess for once, these large companies have answered the requests of the customer, because honestly, what is an Android phone without the option of “modifying the software”? Whatever the case, customers are expressing their happiness though social media feeds.
However, there is no “set” release-date for the update/ tool. All that we know is, that with Verizon, give it 5 years. And sooner or later you will have your unlocked bootloader, living the “Android Dream”.
What do you think about the carrier and manufacturers decision to unlock the bootloader on the S3? Will this help you with your custom ROM and kernel pleasures? I would love to hear your comments.

I bought the gs3 full price on Verizon and i just send them a tweet expressing my disappointment about the bootloader. Hopefully everybody’s complaints can help make them unlock it
I’ve been with Verizon long enough to say I’ll believe it when I see it. Who knows, they could be putting this out there just to shut us all up for a while.
Let’s hope.
I was with sprint for 10 yrs and switch to verizon to grab the gnex but i also have couple buddies that been with Verizon for a long time that are telling me the same thing, that they dont believe it cuz they’ve never done it
I was with TMobile since they were Voicestream. Joined with Verizon last year and have regretted it ever since. Not sure why but for some reason I had a better feel of “trust” with Tmobile than I do with big red.
Like I said I wouldn’t be surprised if they are floating this rumor out there just to quiet us all down in the hopes we get over it in a few weeks. I really can’t believe they’d ever listen to the customer base and change course.
Hope I’m wrong.
