Google Now port to ICS makes head way, Voice now working with a Twist

2

Everyone that can’t have Jelly Bean just yet still really wants Google Now. We reported on a port that was being worked on where it would install, but you had to type everything. That sort of defeated the purpose of the whole experience. We all want voice. Now there is a new process for installation that gets the amazing Google Now service up and running with voice functionality. Before you tell your boss you feel sick so you can run home and install it, there is still one minor issue. While voice is now working where you can tell it to do stuff and look for stuff, once you have said your peace, you have to hit the search button physically. Not a huge deal, as it beats the heck out of typing everything it.

The whole process will involve changing a file in theĀ /system/app section of your device using a root explore app, adding in a new file and mounting the system. Then you need to reboot and install a voice app from the Play Store. If you are already lost then you might just want to sit this one out.

Current Status:
Working:
-It boots!
-searching through the text-box works
-location services work
-info cards work
-notifications work without modifying build.prop
-Voice now works through Jonny_G’s app

Not working:
-Can’t exit the app using the back button on the Google Now ‘Cards’ screen
-Full Jelly Bean voice search
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Devices this will NOT work on:
-Devices that are running anything before Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
-Devices not running an AOSP ROM (in most cases, try anyway and report back)
Still interested in giving it a test? Ya, we thought you might. We know David already has it up and running on his HTC One S sporting an AOSP build and he says it is working great and is really fast. He already set a calendar event. If you want to give it a go, head over to SilentStormer’s XDA thread for full instructions, required files and to join the discussion.
Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.
